Hello,
I am wondering if it is possible to copy and paste (line by line if necessary) already transcribed data into CLAN, or convert a different file type into .cha and open it in CLAN.
I ask because I want to transcribe some data as soon as possible but have not yet got over the learning curve of transcribing in CLAN. But I do want to run analyses using CLAN eventually. So if I do it in CHAT format but in an Excel or Word file, will I be able to copy + paste it over OR convert the file it later?
Thanks very much.

hi Amber
Although it may be tempting to start with WORD because you know it better now, don't do it this way!  It won't end well.  There are ways to take already transcribed data, move it to text edit-type files, and then put them into CLAN, but from your email it sounds like you haven't got the data transcribed yet, so it's REALLY REALLY best to start in CLAN.

On the CHILDES website there is a document called "An SLP's guide to CLAN".  If you haven't seen that yet, take a look.  It's kind of a 'stripped down' version of the CHAT and CLAN manuals designed to help folks get started, going step by step.

Hope this helps.  And welcome to the community!

Thanks Shelley. I have downloaded the guide you mentioned. I will try start by doing this.

I expect I'll be using this forum a lot!

Best wishes

Cutting and pasting works, but conversion into other file types usually doesn’t.

Basic typing in the CHAT editor is no different from typing in MS-Word.  All the same basic commands are there.

If you work in Excel, there will be no way to get your data into CLAN.  If you type what looks like a CHAT file in Word, you can cut and paste, but there will be some minor problems you will have to later fix.  Best to just use the CLAN editor directly.

Thank you. My learning curve issues are around inserting speaker IDs and formatting the file with the headings, tabs etc (i.e., it looks right, but have I done it correctly?). I suppose I will find out when I try to run a command once I've transcribed a bit.
