Good day,

We are undergraduate students working on our thesis regarding the content-form interaction of Filipino children. The transcripts we are working on contain %xarg and %xsem lines. We would like to look into a command that will help retrieve the cross tabulation of these two variables within a transcript.

Thank you very much!

Hi,

How do those tiers relate to each other.

1. Are both those tier present for every speaker tier and you are trying to find paired corresponding items on both %xarg and %xsem tiers? In other words to find which item from %xarg tier corresponds to what item on %xsem tier.

2. Or are you trying to find how one speaker's %xarg tier relates to another speaker's %xsem tier?

It would be very helpful if you could provide a small 6 tiers example of your file and show what kind of output you want to get.

Leonid.

Hi, Leonid.

Thank you very much for replying to our message.

We are looking for which item from %xarg tier corresponds to what item on %xsem tier.
Attached is a sample of our transcript and a screenshot of the cross tabulation, ideally our desired output.

Thank you.

Currently CLAN doesn't have any command to compute what you want or to produce the output you are interested in. CLAN has a +d7 command for pairing up items from two different tiers that have one to one item correspondence. Your sample file indicates that the tier you are interested in do not have matching number of items on them. We are changing CLAN to allow cross tabulation on tier with different number of item and you will be able to download new updated version in a day or so.

I have updated CLAN on TalkBank. FREQ command creates one Excel output for for every input file. This is because Excel spreadsheet is two dimensional table and FREQ create a three dimensional output, with files or speakers being a third dimension.

The commands are:

freq +d8 +t%xarg +t%xsem +d2 sample.cha
freq +d8 +t%xarg +t%xsem +c5 +d2 sample.cha
freq +d8 +t%xarg +t%xsem sample.cha
freq +d8 +t%xarg +t%xsem +c5 sample.cha

if you want to get results across all input files, then:

freq +d8 +t%xarg +t%xsem +d2 +u sample.cha
freq +d8 +t%xarg +t%xsem +c5 +d2 +u sample.cha

If you have any questions or suggestions, then email to me directly instead of chibolts.
