Eval function on CLAN

Hello I am trying to use the eval command but the spreadsheet I am left with has no information on it. Do you know why every column has 0 in it? I have posted the spreadsheet below.

There are several reasons why it might happen. The most likely reason is that the input .cha files do not have %mor tier. The lesser likely reason is that GEM specified on command line does not exist in input files or speakers did not say anything or the speakers specified with +t option are not present in input files. The last reason could be that you have a bad version of CLAN.

Make sure you have the latest version of CLAN. Make sure that your input files have %mor tiers, if they don't, then if you have the grammar for language used in data files, then run MOR command to add %mor tiers. If you don't have the right grammars installed, then use "File->Get MOR Grammar" menu to download and install the right grammar, then run MOR. After that run EVAL again.

When you are running EVAL look in the CLAN Output window for any error messages that EVAL command gives you. Those error messages will tell you what could be wrong.

Finally, if nothing works email to me input data files that give you problem along with command line you used and I will try to figure out what could be wrong.

I am not familiar with the %mor tier so I tried to look it up in the CLAN manual and the tutorial screencasts in talkbank but I wasn't able to find much. Could you give me a reference that describes what the %mor tier is and how to use it?

Hi Jonathan,

The %mor tier provides complete part-of-speech tagging for every word (excluding those marked as repetitions and revisions) indicated on the main speaker tier of the transcript.

The MOR manual — http://talkbank.org/manuals/mor.pdf — has the most information about the %mor tier.

The SLP’s Guide to Clan — http://talkbank.org/manuals/Clin-CLAN.pdf — is a user-friendly, “how to" type of manual designed to teach students and clinicians how to use CHAT and CLAN.  It includes a section called “Preparing to run MOR” as well as sections on KIDEVAL and EVAL.

The tutorial screencasts — http://talkbank.org/screencasts/ -- include a section called “Morphological Analysis” with 3 short videos demonstrating the steps for creating a %mor tier in your transcripts.  There are also 3 screencasts demonstrating different ways to use the EVAL command.

I am going though the SLP's guide to CLAN but I get a message saying that I should try downloading by hand. Do you know what steps to take from here?

Jonathan,

It may have to do with the version of CLAN you are using.  You can download a new CLAN program and try again.  Or you can go to this page — http://talkbank.org/morgrams/ — and click on the "English (eng)" link to download the English grammar.
