Jonathan,

1. This means that the symbol in the file is not the standardized symbol for that tier for that case. The symbol in question will be either highlighted in the text or specified in the CHECK command's output, depending on which one gave you the message. The reason could be a typo in the text file or you can see CHAT manual for the correct symbol you need to use in that instance. The depfile.cut is located in "CLAN/lib" directory, if you want to quickly see the choices that you have. Without know what the symbol was I can't recommend you what to do.

2. This one is self evident. CHAT format does not allow blank lines. I don't know why, but is has been the rule for as long as I remember. May people in charge should reconsider that rule.

3. This mean that some symbol that is expected to come in pairs is missing its counterpart. This could mean the you have "(", but not ")", or the like. I can't say any more without seeing the symbol from the error message

Leonid.

Dear Jonathan,

    Here are some answers:

1.  When you have a blank line in a transcript, CHECK not only gives you the line number in a message down in the bottom error bar, it even highlights the blank line and you delete it.

2.  The "unmatched found on the tier" should probably say "unmatched paired delimiter found on the tier".  This means that you have something like and open angle bracket "< " with no closing bracket ">"  or it could be a square bracket.  These always have to come in pairs.

3.  The "symbol not declared in depfile" could be any sort of strange non-word character sitting my itself.  CHECK tells you the line number.  It is hard for me to know what you might have there without seeing the line.  Just try to remove anything suspicious and see if that makes CHECK happy.

Thank you. I solved two problems but the error message saying unmatched found on tier is still giving me problems. I have attached a picture with the error message and the line it is referring to has my cursor over it. It starts with "first of all my cousin David...".
Could you help me solve this error message?

Note the difference between the apostrophe in the word “didn’t” (it's a curly apostrophe) in that line and the apostrophes in other lines — e.g., “she’s” 2 lines above (it’s straight).  Actually, I see a few more curly apostrophes in your transcript.  You can use the Replace option in the Edit drop down menu, copy and paste the curly apostrophe into the “Replace" field and then type (or copy and paste) a straight apostrophe into the “with” field, then hit "Replace all”.  That should fix the problem.
