Calculating narrative length in words

Hello everyone!

My CLAN skills are very rusty and I'd really appreciate some help :-)

1. I have children's narrative data in a file along with other language tasks. The narratives are gemmed and I would like to compute the narrative length in words. Is there a way to get the word count without a list of the actual words. There are 154 children in my sample and it generates a very long output file.
2. The last time I coded narrative data, after running freq on the coding tiers  I entered the frequencies manually into Excel. Do I still need to do this or is there an easier way?

For Excel output try option +d3 with FRQ command. For regular output of just number of tokens or words try option +d4 with FREQ. If those options do not work in your version of CLAN, then you will need to get the latest version of CLAN.

I just tried it out. The +d4 option works with freq. However because I have 3 tasks in the same file, I need to use gemfreq but the +d4 option does not work with gemfreq.

GEMFREQ is a shortcut for GEM followed by FREQ commands combination. If you want to get more detailed control over the data and its output, then you will need to use GEM command first to extract the right gems from your data and then run FREQ command on that output.

Depending on what kind of data you have you can specify more or less options for GEM command. The following GEM commands assume that your data has @ID: header tiers and %mor: tiers and that you want to run FREQ on %mor: tiers instead of main speaker tiers. Here are two commands that assume that your data gems are marked with @G: header:

gem +sWindow +n +t@ID +t%mor +f +d

gem +sStroke +n +t@ID +t%mor +f +d

After running each command you will see in the CLAN Output window a line at the bottom that starts with "Output file <". That shows you the name of the output file that is associated with the last GEM command. At this time you can run FREQ command on that output filename.
