Hello,

In our lab we opted to transcribe letters on their own, such as "it starts with a b",  without using @l, which the CHAT manual suggests as an option.  When running the MOR analysis on those transcripts, letters on their own are not recognized as nouns like they would be with @l.  We have hundreds of transcripts that omit the coding. Is there an easier solution than going back and changing them all?  Thank you so much!

Lauren,

You can run "chstring +b +cletters.cut *.cha" command on your data files. The "letters.cut" file is attached below. This command will add @l to all single letters. For example, "b" will become "b@l". After you are happy with result you can either run the same CHSTRING command with +1 option or run command "ren -f *.chstr.cex *.cha" on CHSTRING output files. You might also look at "letters.cut" file to see if it needs to be tweaked more for your case.

Lauren,
It should be possible to change these to the correct form using CHSTRING.  Please read about CHSTRING in the CLAN manual.  Be careful with the letters "a" and "i".  Probably best to do that one by hand unless you can make sure that you are not changing the pronoun "I" to i@l, and for "a" you definitely have to do it by hand.  Note that MOR will be thinking that "a" is a pronoun instead of a letter unless you locate all the cases that have to be a@l.
Do this first with a test file to make sure it is doing what you want.  Once you know your changes.cut file is right, you can apply it to all your transcripts in a single pass.
