Hi,

Is there a way to separate homophonous words in CHILDES using CLAN? For example, I am interested in looking at the token frequency of the additive focus particle "too" (e.g., I ate an apple, too) but I don't want it to be intermixed with the "too" that functions as an adverbial (e.g., these shoes are too small for me). How could I differentiate between them?

Thanks,
ST

Dear Simge,

Yes, you can track homophony across part of speech through the %mor line.  For example, the ENG MOR program tags "too" as Result: post|too^adv|too and then POST disambiguates.  So, you can search for either of these on the %mor line.

Thank you so much! I have one more question about frequency counts? Is there a way to combine them across different speakers (but not across different files)? Specifically, I would like to find out how many instances of "too" a child gets exposed to in each session, regardless of who produces it (excluding the child himself/herself).

Sorry about inundating you with questions, and thanks so much for patiently answering them. I can see how exasperating they can sound at times...

You can add the +o3 switch, but then you need -t*CHI to exclude the child.

Thank you so much! You have no idea how helpful this has been for me.

Best regards,
