Dear Leonid

I am trying to work with chstring but I can't get it to work, even on data sets for which I have used chstring in the past, so I wonder if something is wrong with it.
We are hoping to use it to insert morphosyntactic codes into the main tier for a hindi transcript. The reason is that there is no grammar for Hindi under CLAN so we thought we could use chstring to insert the codes into the main tier. I have created a changes.cut file which is in the same directory as the files I want to use. I have also downloaded the latest version of CLAN. I have also got the unicode font installed. The file on which I have tried it contains "gaya", "gayi" and "karke" so the issue is not that the items are not in the text.

I have pasted the output in below. I get the same results for English files that I have in the past changed with chstring. No changes made.

The changes.cut file attached, but an overview of the changes we are hoping to make are given below. Of course if you have a different suggestion as to what we can do to work with Hindi morphosyntax, then we'd be very grateful. thanks a lot for your help.
best wishes
Jeanine

" gaya " " gaya@mas "  (this inserts the code @mas which stands for "masculine" into the main tier)
 " gayyi " " gayyi@fem "
" karke " " karke@temp_sub "
" uska " " uska@poss_mas "
 " uski " " uski@poss_fem "
 " usne " " usne@pron_subj_3SG "

Jeanine,

CHSTRING by default works on word bases. Your changes.cut file assumes that you will run CHSTRING in “string” mode with +w option. You can solve this problem in one of two ways. I am attaching your "changes-string.cut” and modified "changes-word.cut” files. Here are two commands that will work with those files. The first command is better.

chstring +cchanges-word.cut 221134AFKA.cha

chstring +w +cchanges-string.cut 221134AFKA.cha
