Dear to all,

I have problems installing CLAN on my university computers (Windows 10 version 1709).
The following error message (message 1) appears when opening the media file (error opening movie file: "e\....mp4").
And, if I click on OK, message 2 appears (Clan MFC Application a cessé de fonctionner").

Do you know where the problem comes from and how to solve it?

Thank you in advance.

Celine,

I can’t read the error message 1, because screenshot picture is too small and the message is out of focus. The message in your email "e\....mp4” seems impossible. I would expect it to say “e:....mp4”. Is your data and media located on some network drive? Is you CLAN installed on "e:" drive?

I would like you to try something to figure out if the problem is with media file or CLAN or your computer configuration. Newer CLAN distributions include “examples” directory in “TalkBank\CLAN” directory. I would like to open fie "TalkBank\CLAN\examples\elan2chat\mytheory.cha” and play any bullet. If media does play, then the problem is with your own media file’s format or where it is located. I assume that your university computer is just a personal computer located at your university. Some universities install CLAN in location that users do not have access to. Is this how your CLAN is installed? If you have access to “"TalkBank\CLAN\work” directory”, then try copying your datafile and media file to "TalkBank\CLAN\work” directory and see if it plays from that new directory. If your media file still does not play, then the problem is with your media file’s format.

If media from file "TalkBank\CLAN\examples\elan2chat\mytheory.cha” does not play, then the problem is with CLAN being unable to located directory where the media file is located or your computer’s configuration. Does your Windows 10 system have the latest Microsoft update installed?

Dear Leonid,

Thank you for your answer and suggestions.

The data - transcription and media - are well in the same folder, and are not on a network.
These are computers installed in classrooms for students. CLAN is well installed on the computers to which we have access.
With the computer scientist, we tried the two solutions you propose. Neither one of them works.

However, now, when we open the transcription and go get the video media, we have access to the sound and the transcription scrolls with the sound, but the video window does not appear.

The installed version of windows is: Windows 10 - 1709. We are using the latest version of CLAN well.

Céline

Céline,

I assume that you are playing video media file, because audio media files do not open video windows. Are you unable to see video window on all computers or just one. Perhaps the video window is off the screen. Try reseting CLAN’s options with menu “Edit->Reset options”, then click on “yes” button and quit CLAN immediately. Now restart CLAN and try again. If this doesn’t work, then please email to me the data files you are using and please transfer the corresponding media file to us. You can read instruction on how to do it at “https://talkbank.org/share/contrib.html”. Look under point 8.

Leonid.
