Dear all,

My student is working with a dataset from the frog story corpora and have difficulty exporting results in an excel sheet using the following command (there are 15 pictures so 15 gem header lines per participant, that's why we use the s switch in the following command):

gem +n +s”01”+d  +t*CHI

We tried +d +d0 +d1 +d2 also +d6 and +d8 with no luck (also receiving the message 'the only +d levels allowed are 0-2').

What we expect that the output file will give us the information in the ID header (eg., participant ID, age)  along with the actual utterance(s) per @G (and if possible which line in the whole CHAT file that utterance corresponds to, for example @G: 01 lines 1-3).

Many thanks for your kind help in advance.

Best regards,
Zeynep Köylü

Dear Zeynep,
GEM was not designed to do this.  It is designed to pick out blocks of CHAT transcript, not to send things to a spreadsheet.  There are other programs for his and you could use GEM as an initial filter and then run those other programs.
I wonder whether you really want to rely on Excel in this way.  Excel is not designed to for further analysis of text.  What is your student trying to find or figure out?
Also, which corpus are you using?

Zeynep,

I don't fully understand what it is that you are missing in GEM output.

If you do get speaker tiers associate with the @G: 01 gem in the output and you are simply missing the @ID headers, then you need to add the +t@ID option to the command line. Most commands do not include @ID header in the output unless you use the +t@ID option.

If you are not getting any output at all, then perhaps the gem you are looking for does not exist inthe data file or the +s option, like the one in your example command line in your email, has fancy quotes instead of plain quotes. If you still can't get output with GEM command, then please email that data file to me directly along with exact command line that you tried and I will test it at my end. My email is spe...@andrew.cmu.edu.

Leonid.
