Hi!

I ran into a problem with CLAN where it always crushes my files every time I run a check commend. Does it have anything to do with the fact that I'm using a MAC?

Thank you!

Molly,

If CLAN opens at all on your Mac, then the problem you are describing doesn't have anything to do with Mac. I would suggest that you quit CLAN completely and restart it and see if the problem persists. If it does, then reboot your Mac and try again. After that you can try installing the latest version of CLAN on your Mac or sent to me directly the data file that crushes CLAN when you run CHECK and I will try to diagnose the problem. Also, tell me if you are running CHECK command from Commands window or you are using ESC-L or "Mode->Check opened file" menu.

Leonid.

Hi Leonid,

I was running CHECK command from Commands window. I believe it might be the way I concert word file to cha. created the problems. I have no problem opening a cha file that already was checked without errors. However, when I run CHECK commands from Commands window, and it tells me the file has some errors, then I try to open the file by double clicking it, a window pops up saying my file may be corrupted. I have attached to this email the problematic data file and a screenshot of pop-up window which states the file may be corrupted.

Thank you so much for your assistance!

Best,
Molly

Dear Molly,
That file is probably something like an MS-Word file.  Here is a sample of what it looks like.  I'm afraid CLAN can't do much with this.

Hi Molly,

The file you attached is a MSWord file. You need to change its extension from .cha to .doc and open it with Microsoft Word. After that you need to select menu "File->Save As...". After that select File Format "Plain Text (.txt) - look at picture below:

Hi Leonid,

Thank you for your detailed step by step instructions. But weirdly, I don't have the file tab in my Word toolbar. One of my colleagues suggested copying the word file into CLAN and saving it as a CLAN file. Then use CHSTRING + q command to delete extra spaces between lines in the file and it worked!!! However, when I run check command on my files, it always tells me there's a problem with the apostrophes in each line. I have attached a screenshot of the output. Can you please tell me how to fix this? Does it have anything to do with the keyboard input I use? I use the default input on my laptop.

Thank you so much for your help!

Now click on "Save" button and you should see the next window where you should select Other encoding: "Unicode (UTF-8)" like in the next picture:

After clicking on "OK" button you will have file .txt saved. Rename that extension to .cha and now CLAN will be able to open that .cha file. It should look like in the picture below:

Molly,

Those quotes are inserted by MS-Word. For some reason MS-Word replaces regular single and double quotes that you type on your keyboard with what they call fancy quotes by default. You can find one of those quotes in your file in CLAN and replace it with regular single quote like this one '. Or you can use CHSTRING to do the same on all files. Just make sure to use -w option with CHSTRING when doing it. I don't know which exactly fancy single quote you have in your file, because there are several of them, so I can't give an exact example.

I am curious about your Word not having a "File" menu. I have never heard that before. What kind of version of Word do you have?

Leonid.

Hi Leonid,

I tried the CHSTRING -w option, but the output said "can't open either one of the changes files" (please see attached image bellow). I could replace each fancy apostrophe with the correct one in CLAN, but it was too much work to correct one at a time. I couldn't use the "replace all" option in word since it seemed that word could only process the fancy apostrophes. I found the "file" tab in microsoft word and it was located next to the apple icon on my screen, not in the word document window. I'm not familiar with the mac system, sorry about the confusion!

Thanks!

Dear Molly,
You should use the replace function in CLAN to replace MS-Word curly apostrophe with regular apostrophe.

Molly,

The CHSTRING requires the +s or +c option to specify what you want to replace and with what. Please email your data file in question to me directly and I will give you the exact CHSTRING command that will replace all fancy quotes in your data files.

Molly,

Attached is a CHSTRING's script file "change.cut". Put it in the same directory where your data file is and then run command:

chstring +1 -w -cchange.cut Fall_T3_C5_C06_Circle.cha
