Hello,

We are exploring the fluency measures computed automatically through FLUCALC, and have questions about how exactly FLUCALC computes words per minute and syllable per minute. We haven’t been able to find this in the manual or published articles. The denominator doesn’t seem to be based on the overall elapsed time, but we can’t verify if it is based on the elapsed time from bullet to bullet for each speaker. Could you point us to what information FLUCALC is pulling for these measures?

Thank you!

Tracy

Dear Tracy,

This is noted in the manual, where it says on page 139, "If the sample has been processed for ASR (automatic speech recognition) using the batchalign system at https://github.com/talkbank there will be a new %wor line that can be used when the +a switch is selected to derive more accurate times for word and pause duration. These additional times are then summarized in 9 columns are the end of the output.”

If you were using an older version of the manual, that might be missing.

I have a similar question to Tracy.  On p. 139 of the manual, it states "The user can select to have FLUCALC use either words or syllables as the denominator for the computation of percentages (indicated below by %)."  How do we know what the default denominator is when we only Run "flucalc +t*CHI" ?

Thanks,
Lisa

Dear Lisa,

If you just type FLUCALC in the CLAN command window and hit return you will see lots of information about the command. You'll see so much info that you'll have to scroll up to see this piece of info which tells you that you need to add +b to the command line if you want to select word mode. Otherwise, it will use syllables.

FLUCALC creates a spreedsheet with a series of fluency measures.
Usage: flucalc [fS re sS  s@F  sgS  smS tS xN zN 2  ] filename(s)
+a : get pauses time value from %wor tier (default: disregard %wor tier)
+b : select word mode analyses (default: syllables mode)

Hope that helps,
Davida

Hi Lisa,

You can also look at the bottom red line in FLUCALC spreadsheet output. It will say something like:

This spreadsheet was run in syllable mode

Leonid.
