Are you still using a UPS for your server?

Hi all

Our UPS has died a slow death and needs replacing. But I'm wondering, given the cost of replacing a heavy-duty rack-mounted unit, and also how rarely power surges/cuts happen now, is it actually worth the investment? Maybe a basic standalone €200 unit would make more sense

Any thoughts welcome :)

Depends on what you need really. Unless you have UPS on all other devices downstream having a server online whilst everyone else is in the dark is pointless.

So you can probably get away with a more modest unit that will protect against spikes in service rather than giving sustained operation in event of power outage. 

However with the prospect of brown-outs due to grid capacity issues you most definitely want some form of protection - electronics do not like brown-outs!!

Depends on your use case - they could be something said for keeping a server running if the UPS is powering a gateway/router and wireless AP (chromebooks and phones could still operate) if power outages are frequent. As Greg pointed out not much point having a server up when everything else is down (except maybe if you still have facility or the like running locally for attendance. 

In reality a small UPS that allows the server to shut down safely is probably all that is needed. Most have software that will trigger a safe shutdown - e.g. APC Powerchute.
