Hi,
I am hoping some of you very kind and experienced people could help or advise me please. I have a laptop which is having issues the keyboard/mouse.  It keeps automatically typing square brackets. It is a Toshiba Satellite Pro, I have tried attaching an external keyboard and mouse but the problem with continuous typing of brackets is still happening. The laptop itself is working great otherwise.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,
Róisín

Hi Róisín,

With the external keyboard attached, try disabling the built-in keyboard. https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-disable-keyboard-windows-10?r=US&IR=T. Note that this is a little delicate - you don't want to render yourself totally keyboard-less. If that solves the problem, albeit temporarily, it's time to look into the keyboard itself. See if there is any obvious issue (crumb stuck under key, etc.). Does the square bracket key feel normal? Next step, depending on your exact laptop is to do a little googling. If your keys are removable (many are), remove the key itself and check the mechanism beneath it. Worst case is the laptop needs a new keyboard. With almost all laptops this is surprisingly inexpensive and rather easy to do - a few screws and one ribbon cable, and that's that. I've had to replace a few keyboards over the years - they get heavily used and it is not uncommon for them to die before other things do. Another thing is age - the older the laptop is the more likely it is that it is hardware failure.

Hi Roisin,

It could be the driver

Try the following:

  1. In the search box on the taskbar, type device manager, then select Device Manager from the list of results.

  2. In the list of hardware categories, find the device that you want to update, and then double-click the device name.

  3. Click the Driver tab, click Update Driver, and then follow the instructions.

Morning Róisín

Does it type automatically on its own or is it only when you try to type something?
Are all the keys affected of just some of them?
What programs does it happen in?
MsWord, Notepad etc. etc.

Regards

Val

To be honest it seems that it might be a stuck key or keys.
Anything spilt on it?

kind regards
David

Hi David,

Not that I am aware of and the key seems to be moving correctly - not sticking at all.

Kind regards,

A keyboard issue could be Covid related. We had a number of laptop keyboards damaged and needing replacement due to cleaning  with wet wipes !!

Hi Val,

Yes it is just the square bracket symbol which keeps typing.

Hi Róisin

You said earlier that you tried an external USB keyboard and that had the same problem as the onboard one, so there is a possibility that its not the keyboard but a software setting which could be caused by Malware a Windows update or the installation of a program.

To make sure its not hardware run the following test

You can now test every key on the board to make sure that they key you are pressing is working correctly

After this do the following

Activate the onboard keyboard

Go to Start , then select Settings / Ease of Access / Keyboard, and turn on the toggle under Use the On-Screen Keyboard.

Use the mouse to control the keyboard and test every character

Brian

Your keyboards should be anti-spill so the wet wipes should not damage it.

What is an anti spill keyboard? We use the ‘pre covid’ keyboards and spray them I don’t know if that’s the substance being sprayed the advice was don’t over spray! Has continued to be a conundrum for me.. but probably irrelevant to this substantive issue

Some laptops have small holes in the keyboard tray, which via tubes pass a spill through to the underside of the laptop.
Others are sealed.
Neither do I trust. Liquid and laptops do not mix.
