Pacers explain game-winning shot that Celtics had issues with

Because you selected: Basketball

Souichi Terada | January 13, 2026 at 05:00 AM

The Pacers narrowly beat the Celtics in what ended up being a close game. The slim difference was Pascal Siakam’s game-winning bucket with 6.1 seconds left in the game. It gave the Pacers the 98-96 win over the C’s on Monday in Indiana.

It was clear C’s coach Joe Mazzulla wasn’t thrilled with the final couple possessions. His prompt news conference after the game featured him answering six different questions with two words: “Illegal screen.” It appeared he was talking about Siakam’s screen on Derrick White that freed Siakam up and allowed him to get the preferred matchup. Pacers coach Rick Carlisle spoke about what they drew up on the final play of the game.

“We were getting everybody out of the way and ... it was make a play,” Carlisle told reporters in Indiana. “Figure out the right play. Figure out the right play and go make it. It wasn’t an easy shot. It took great footwork and his ability to do things at awkward angles. But he’s the kind of guy that makes shots like that look routine.”

Payton Pritchard is is the Celtics ‘Name to Know’ Player of the Game in Monday’s loss to Pacers

With Jaylen Brown sidelined with back spasms on Monday night, Payton Pritchard took on a leading role on Monday night against the Pacers.

Pritchard led the way for the undermanned Celtics, finishing with a game-high 23 points, which makes him Monday’s “Name to Know” Player of the Game. The Name to Know Player of the Game is sponsored by John’s Sewer and Drain Cleaning, the Name to Know when your drains don’t flow.

The Celtics guard was a bright spot in another challenging night for Boston’s offense, which mustered just 40 second half points for the second straight game. Pritchard helped lead a fourth quarter rally as Boston fought back from an eight-point deficit with eight minutes remaining in regulation to tie up the game with 29.1 seconds left.

Joe Mazzulla sends message in bizarre press conference after Celtics loss to Pacers

Because you selected: Basketball

A screen set by Pacers star Pascal Siakam helped him get the matchup he wanted leading up to his game-winning jumper against the Celtics Monday night. That play clearly was on Joe Mazzulla’s mind as he met with reporters in Indiana following Boston’s 98-96 loss to the Pacers.

The Celtics coach answered all six questions asked to him in the 44-second press conference, responding to each with the two words ‘illegal screen’ despite many questions having nothing to do with that sequence.

The Celtics have tried to send a message to officials after several games recently for a lack of foul calls, with All-Star Jaylen Brown getting fined $35,000 on Monday for his comments after the Spurs loss on Saturday. Mazzulla took a concise route to deliver his message on Monday night that likely won’t draw a fine from the league but certainly will bring attention to the situation.

4 takeaways as Celtics lose to Pacers without Jaylen Brown

Because you selected: Basketball

Souichi Terada | January 12, 2026 at 09:54 PM

While the Celtics fought through their shooting woes, they fell just short in a 98-96 loss to the Pacers on Monday in Indiana. Pascal Siakam hit the game-winning bucket with 6.1 seconds left in the game to seal the win. The C’s dropped to 24-15 while the East-worst Pacers improved to 9-31.

Jaylen Brown missed a game for just the third time this season due to low back spasms. It was clear the C’s missed their best player in what ended up being a dogfight against the Pacers. The night started in a close back-and-forth throughout the first half with Indiana shooting hot from 3-point land.

But the start of the second half was an issue. The Pacers went on a 20-4 run to take a big swing on the Celtics. The C’s got right up off the mat to force a close game, playing catchup for most of the second half. In the end, Siakam’s game-winning bucket was just enough for the Pacers to take the win after the C’s tied the game. Derrick White’s 3-pointer at the buzzer was off the mark.

Celtics star didn’t hold back after Spurs loss and now he’s paying the price

Because you selected: Basketball

Jaylen Brown voiced his displeasure with officials on Saturday night after a close loss to the Spurs and got his bill for the lengthy rant on Monday afternoon. The NBA announced that Brown was fined $35,000 for public criticism of officiating after a 100-95 loss to the Spurs on Saturday, Jan. 10.

Boston posted the second-fewest free throws in a game in team history, getting just four attempts in the loss. The Spurs, in comparison, had 20 free throw attempts which led Brown to go on an epic rant after the loss in the Celtics locker room.

“I feel like, honestly, they just got away with a lot, and I’m tired of the inconsistency,” Brown said. “I’ll accept the fine at this point. I thought it was some (expletive) tonight. I think they’re a good defensive team, but they ain’t that damn good. I hope somebody can just pull up the clips because it’s the same (expletive) every time we play a good team.

Former Celtics guard Jrue Holiday returned to the floor on Sunday night in a reserve role after missing nearly two months due to a sprained right calf.

The two-time champion suffered the injury on Nov. 14 and sat out the past 27 games before returning to the floor with the Blazers on Sunday. The veteran guard came off the bench in a reserve role for the first time all season while facing a minutes limit. Celtics trade rumors: Boston showing interest in Mavericks center

Because you selected: Basketball

Brian Robb | January 12, 2026 at 02:28 PM

The Celtics have received strong play from their frontcourt in recent weeks, but it appears they are still in the market for more big man depth. One week after HoopsHype reported that Boston has expressed interest in Clippers big man Ivica Zubac, NBA insider Marc Stein reports that Boston is one of three teams that have checked in on Mavericks center Daniel Gafford. The Hawks and Pacers have also shown interest for the Dallas center.

The big man is currently starting at center for a struggling Mavericks team that has been decimated by injuries this season. Gafford, 27, is averaging 7.9 points and 6.4 rebounds per game this year in 28 appearances, including 19 starts.

Gafford only makes $14.3 million this season but he signed an extension in July worth $54 million over the next three years, which will bump his salary up to $17.2 million for the 2026-27 season.

Former Celtics forward returns from torn ACL more than 1 year later

Because you selected: Basketball

Souichi Terada | January 12, 2026 at 12:41 PM

Grant Williams was back playing for the Hornets more than a year after tearing his right ACL. The former C’s wing played 14 minutes in the Hornets’ blowout 150-95 win over the Jazz last Saturday.

Williams finished with nine points and eight rebounds, shooting 3-for-10 on 3-pointers on the night. It was a successful return for Williams after being away from the game for 14 months. The Hornets also beat up the Jazz, making it an easy night for Williams in his return.

“Felt great, honestly,” Williams said, via the Hornets. “The group was very welcoming. It was good flow of a game, especially a game like that where you’re beating a team like the way we were. It was definitely a little nerves and anxious anxiety from the start. But as the game settled in, so did those. Felt good to be back.”

I watched it a few times, and it looked illegal enough for me. That would have been called earlier in the game.
I really saw that extra step before the shot as a travel.
Between the alleged 3 steps, plus a Eurostep, these layups and drives have more illegal steps than Rosie Ruiz did in the Boston Marathon.
