Hi everyone!

This group is always so helpful with finding open resources so I was hoping someone here might be able to help.

Our art program is searching for a tool that would help students pronounce names and techniques for their presentations. Some students were using Google, but that doesn't provide much in the way of correct pronunciation for non-English names and terms.

Our Librarian found HowToPronounce which we'll likely use if we can't find an alternative. It's great with pronunciations but it's overloaded with ads and isn't very intuitive. Any suggestions?

For my own personal use, I've often just gone to YouTube and searched with "how to pronouce name <whatever>" ... it does quite a good job, frequently.  Many of the short videos there seem to be sponsored by "pronouncenames.com", which is pretty good when you go there directly!

Hi Rebecca,
I would suggest checking out Youglish.com. It compiles Youtube videos with transcripts and makes them searchable by word. For example, here is "chiaroscuro". I also tried it with some h artists' names and got enough results. It's useful for scrolling through and quickly hearing a bunch of different people saying the word in context.

Another option is just to type into Google your question, for example, "How do pronounce Giacometti". The first result that comes up will be a  phonetic pronunciation with audio at different speeds and the option to record and  get feedback on your pronunciation.

I hope that's helpful!

Wow, Elizabeth, Youglish is new to me, but it's amazing (and it offers the same service in so many languages). I like how it puts the pronunciation in context of more content, and the way it uses the transcript that is also a navigation tool within the videos. And most words offered more than a few videos to use, like for camera obscura

I initially thought the audio pronunciation in online dictionaries like Merriam-Webster or Wiktionary would work, but this is much better.

Thanks again,

Alan
