Hi All,

I am working on checking all of our OER materials in advance of the April 2026 deadline for accessibility compliance and am concerned about materials that have YouTube videos embedded where the videos are not ours. How are people handling the audio description requirements? Or are you just removing the videos/links?

Thanks!
Cindy

Hello Cindy,

You can get the video transcript in the video description (see "more..."). I won't quote the legality, but if you are using it for an educational purpose, not trying to download it to source it to yourself, or not trying to sell it (commercial use), the transcript is available with a few clicks; then you can store it in a cloud-based repository and provide a direct link to the video in your materials. If you're not comfortable with that, simply email the creator to request permission to use it and explain that it's for an Open Educational Resource that will not be used commercially.

If you would like a step-by-step guide on how to get the transcript (and, if required, how to use it through your Learning Management System, or LMS), I can walk you through the steps.

Take care,

Dear Cindy et al.:

As a reminder, transcripts of videos are also copyrighted. This is akin to lyrics of music being copyrighted. So unless there is an open licensed or explicit permission to download and use, downloading and sharing is a violation. Now, it may be fair use, but I am not qualified to comment on that and will let others chime in if needed.

Another note: Technically a video transcript isn't an "audio description". The latter is only a transcript if the video carries only audio information (or only decorative video component).

We are working on using AI to help with address some videos. Please contact me directly and we can discuss how we can help you offline since you are now a LibreNet member (as is every other Cal Community College).

Cheers,

Delmar
