Hi all, this message is cross-posted.

I just got an FAQ and I'm wondering how others answer this one:

"I'm also having a hard time letting go of Gerald Graff's They Say / I Say -- students seem to find that so useful for understanding writing as a conversation, and for the nuts and bolts approach to how to accomplish that in their work. So I'm hoping I might track down something that could help with that, as well."

Has anyone found a good open alternative?

Thanks in advance,
Amy

Hi Amy,

Two of our faculty members have just published Write Here, Right Now, a textbook dealing with academic writing for undergraduate students in the Arts and Social Sciences.  It may be worth a look:  https://pressbooks.library.ryerson.ca/writehere/

Hi Amy,

A professor here at Hunter College recently sent us the following links, which he has been using as replacements for They Say/I Say. They might be helpful.

Hi Michael,

They Say/I Say is under copyright. The instructor would like to replace it with an openly licensed alternative.

FYI,
Amy

An OpenSUNY textbook that I’ve woven into my first-year composition classes is Writing in College: From Competence to Excellence by Amy Guptill:  https://textbooks.opensuny.org/writing-in-college-from-competence-to-excellence/

“Chapter 5: Listening to Sources, Talking to Sources” directly recognizes Graff and Birkenstein’s approach through a chapter-length overview:  https://milnepublishing.geneseo.edu/writing-in-college-from-competence-to-excellence/chapter/listening-to-sources-talking-to-sources/

Hi all, thank you for the excellent suggestions! The faculty member is going to look through the resources you all have shared. I won't pretend to have read them all, but in particular the Academic Phrasebank seems really useful in finding open/free alternatives to They Say/I Say (it is free but under copyright).

Thanks again, everyone!

Amy,

Thanks so much for this great list! Naomi Salmon just wrote to tell me that she's also prepared a non-branded version of the English 100 reader without student essays to make adoption/adaptation in non-UW contexts a bit easier. That version of the text can be found here: https://wisc.pb.unizin.org/opencomp/.

All best,
Steel
