Automatic textbook billing programs, also called “Inclusive Access” and other brand names, have some fine print that you and your students should know about.  OpenStax along with other partners including CCCOER and Open Education Global are encouraging you to learn more so you can advocate for the only truly free and open" solution for textbooks.

  • Publishing companies created automatic billing to address the textbook cost crisis. Sure, students pay somewhat less with these programs, but they end up with more limitations. The biggest limitation? That great big hidden fee.

  • There’s more. Students only get a few weeks to opt-out of the program. And, in some cases, their grades can suffer when they do. Let’s shake off the fine print on automatic textbook billing and examine whether the current textbook contracts are a truly inclusive solution for every student.

  • We believe that textbooks should be free—free from confusing contracts, free and open for modification, and just plain free. OpenStax, a leading provider of open educational resources, is leading a nationwide campaign called Free the Textbook. OpenStax has over 40 free, flexible textbooks. There are a lot of great open educational resources available for instructors and students. Let’s choose textbooks first.

Best Regards,
Una

Hi everyone!

I'm looking for an OER proctoring service. We currently have Respondus Monitor, but it will not work with some of the Nursing courses that use CoursePoint. So, I'm looking to find an alternative solution for proctoring.

Thank you very much!

I'm not aware of any OER proctoring service.

We have Monitor, but our Nursing faculty prefer to have students use their phones to log onto a Webex session while they're taking their tests with Respondus LockDown Browser.  I suppose you could do the same with a free conferencing system such as Google Meet.

Hi Meagan,

Most of the proctoring tools I'm aware of are proprietary software, but I believe there are at least two exceptions: 1) a consortium of several international institutions (largely led from Switzerland) have been developing an openly licensed proctoring system called Safe Exam Browser that has downloadable versions for Windows, Mac, and iOS: https://safeexambrowser.org/about_overview_en.html and 2) edX has released their Python-based exam proctoring tool under an open license: https://github.com/edx/edx-proctoring (instructions for using here: https://edx.readthedocs.io/projects/edx-partner-course-staff/en/latest/proctored_exams/index.html). I have not used either tool, so you'd probably need to turn to others for more details about implementation or capabilities.

All best,

One of the things that most bothers me about exclusive access is that the students don't retain the license in perpetuity or in most cases into the next semester. They can't build a library that will support them in follow on courses or just for life in general. This is especially hard on students who are looking to transfer, or eventually do graduate or professional training, both for their follow on studies and also to prepare for entrance exams.

Inclusive access is pernicious

"Moreover, all three providers described traditional, print textbooks as, more or less, limiting, not just in terms of cost, but also in terms of format and capabilities, and expressed their desire to provide something that is not just an electronic version of a textbook. Thus, they talked about openness as an enabler of freedom—freedom from academic structure, outdated notions of authority, and the physicality of print. The idea of freedom is also strongly reflected in LibreTexts’s tagline, “Free the Textbook,”

Hello Josh and all,

Thanks for nudging us back on topic :-).

I agree that “Free the Textbook” is a great tagline and one that’s been in use for many years now.  Open Education is big tent and I’m so glad that the community shares and supports each other as we move toward our commons goals of student success and faculty choice.  Hats off to OpenStax who is leading the current campaign.  wefreethetextbook.org

All the best,
Una
