We are also getting a dumping of rain. I hope this helps with the water level’s because Lake St Clair is low. We launch our boats on April 26th.

Chuck, I'm headed up the mast too. I need to clean the mast and spreaders. Nasty green slime forms every winter here. 

I tried the ATN mast climber but it really scratched up the mast as I went up.  Instead I use a 3:1 block and tackle with a bosuns chair and a prusik loop on a fixed halyard for safety. Works good.  I'm 64 years and 175 lbs. My arms get a good workout. Here's a youtube video which explains it well.

I had a short three day window of nice weather at the boat, and got out sailing for a few hours.  

BTW, My spreaders have the same green grunge on the underside and need a clean also.  What do you use to wipe that stuff off?

I use a magic eraser or a white star brite pad, and haul up a light hose with me to rinse it off. I would like to find something to keep the green grunge from growing back though.  I imagine a good wax coating of some kind when the mast is down would help.

We have been out twice on Ripple.  Once to deliver her from Baltimore to Grasonville and the second time for an afternoon sail around Eastern Bay.  Like Chuck - our day sail was jib only and she performed very well, 6+ knots close reaching.  

I had a couple of sail repairs done over the winter.

Current projects include - 

1. Cleaning of the spreaders (green funk), re-tape the boots and general check of the mast head.
2. Electrical troubleshooting - I need to replace the stereo and appear to have a short...damn Gremlins.
3. Replace a switch in the binnacle used for a cockpit light.
4. Replace the rubber leg covers on the swim ladder.
5. Figure out a drain for the AC condensate. - Suggestions appreciated.

 These are all first world problems!

you know of any cc3436 for sale on the bay?    My 78cc34 is race rigged and has a host of problems, that i need to upgrade to a craft more suitable for a newly retired cruising gent?

I have a Mermaid condensator kit on my air conditioner.  I saw some places now want $249 for it.  Check it out and maybe you can find a used one at Bacons or that used parts place in Grasonville, Anchors & Oars Sailboat Parts.

You DIY’ers are impressive. Keep up the good work. 

I will report without shame that my skill set is sufficient only for basic maintenance items like bottom painting — in the works. Professionals have replaced the stuffing box with a dripless seal. That will eliminate the mysterious problem of water accumulating above the floor boards by the galley stove when on starboard tacks (reported here a couple of year’s ago.) Apparently, water from behind the engine had only one way to get forward — under the floorboards in the aft cabin then on to the galley.

Hi Anthony, these are the only 34/36's for sale that I know of, neither of which are 'on the bay' but the one in Gaspe might not be all that far if you really wanted one.

Hello and thank you for accepting me to the group. 

  My name is Neil. For over a decade , in the nineties, I was the mainsail trimmer on the 1990 C&C 34+ SAVAGE.  I have recently become her caretaker as well. 

 Savage was bought by Alan and his wife Lisa in the early nineties. ( The second owners of Hull #22)

 This was not their first race boat. 

New racing sails, traveler moved to cockpit in front of helm, light weight everything! 

 He picked out a crew, new and old, and for the next decade, raced up and down the long island sound. 

(Savage built lifelong friendships)

 Consistently we placed (usually first) in our phrf class. We won a lot. 

  In 2000, Savage was sailed to  Key West from NY for race week,  and after a dramatic last-race-win to take first place, she was cruised back to Ny ( a true racer/ cruiser)

 Savage was raced hard. Continuously proving the strength and build quality of the 34/36. 

 She shrugged off a lightning strike  . She had collisions with other boats on the race course, she ran aground on rocks and even bounced off a buoy. 

 She once broke free from a mooring and ended up against a bridge for days. 

 Al always made sure she was fixed properly. ( Often doing the work himself)

 Savage spent the next decade or so as a cruising platform .

 Mostly cruising from NY to Maine. 

 A change of plans prompted the  purchase of a large trawler. 

 Savage found a home on the hard on city Island NY where she has sat , listed with a broker, for the past three years.  Listed at fair market price. She never sold. 

  Sadly and unexpectedly Alan passed away last summer . 

 His legacy and accomplishments go way beyond his Savage. 

  His story is a good one. But this is about his beloved 34 +. 

 I came across Savage, like many of you, on yachtworld or Facebook at a very suspect price. 

 I reached out to Lisa and questioned the future of Savage. Understandably and sadly , her faithful Sailboat, was far down on her list of priorities . 

 Having so much sentimental value, We came up with a plan to keep her " in the Savage family" and maintain her to the standard she deserves. 

 Alan will forever be at the helm of his beloved Savage. 

 

 We are launching Savage this spring.

The underpriced listing on yachtworld was placed a broker, after being unable to reach Alan for six months . 

 There was a yard bill attached to that listing price as well . The broker and yard both did the right thing for Lisa upon learning of Alan's passing. 

 I'm looking forward to sharing stories and photos ,  as Lisa and I work together to keep SAVAGE sailing forever and to keep Alan's memory alive.

Well it's taken longer than expected (  to be expected) . after a failed launch in late April due to a bad transducer thru hull, and fixing an overheating problem with the yanmar, Savage was successfully sailed down the east river in NYC, and to the south shore of long island. Currents and high tides planned perfectly, we even got to sail the last leg of the 8 hour trip. 

 Savage will remain in the shallows of the South shore of long island for a year while being refit and updated. Look for her back on the long island sound in a year or so.
