Mixing elbow status and alloy

Hi Blair-  What engine?  On my Universal M4-30 here is what my mixing elbow looked like.  I thought it might be plugged but it turned out to be fine internally.  Dave

Hi Blair, 

Itlooks like a standard steel Yanmar unit that's been replaced moderately recently. You need to take it off and look inside to see the state of affairs.

The stainless steel options are pointless as it gets clogged long before it rusts out.  If it's clogged just replace with the same and go sailing!

Hello,

I am considering replacing the mixing elbow and manifold flange.

From experience can anyone please share if it is easier to get the exhaust water hose off of the mixing elbow before or after removing the assembly from the manifold?

Any other tips would be greatly appreciated

I replaced the mixing elbow on my Yanmar 3YM30F engine after discovering that the cast iron one had cracked.  I purchased a stainless steel replacement from a Vancouver, WA company at the suggestion of an engine repair person.  I don't recall it costing much more than a cast iron version and I believe its lifespan could be much longer.  I also see them for sale on Ebay.

I would remove the hose from the fitting first, using a large hook, available from the auto store.  I bought an assortment of them from Harbor Freight, for about $7.  You can soften the hose using a heat gun, then work the hook into, and all around to widen it a little and because your hose's position, I would place a small block of wood, say a 1 x 2 against the edge and tap it with a small hammer, to break the bond loose.  Wrap a rag around the hose and use a pipe wrench to give it a slight twist to do the same thing.  After the bond is broken and the hose is loosened from the elbow, the hook should work to pull the hose down and off the fitting.  Best of luck.
