I have a 1994 36XL variation. I purchased it a couple of years ago from the first owner( ex. Saffire. The boat has an open transom and an aftermarket swim platform and ladder. I find the ladder. Cumbersome. My thoughts are this boat was shipped before completion after the fire. Ideally I would like to find a salvage boat and use the transom closure and ladder. ( I know this would require work. ) the other option is to find a more appropriate ladder. Any ideas or does anyone know of a salvage boat?

Hi Peter, A little more detail or maybe a picture.  I believe an XL with the new deck would be a stepped transom and the pluses from prior to the fire had a fold out transom with a ladder incorporated that formed part of the stern rail when up.  An 'open' transom almost sounds like it's the deck from an R. Do you have an anchor locker and full cockpit seats?

Cheers,
Tom S

PS I had my eye on Safire when she was for sale but didn't get down to view her in time.

Hi Tom.
It is one of the older versions with the folding transom door and ladder. The boat ha cockpit seating and an anchor Locker. Traveler is aft just forward of the helm. I will get photos.

Hi Tom.
Do you have a photo of the transom door? I would be interested in seeing an image of how the swim ladder forms part of the stern rail when it’s in the up position.
   Thanks

Hi Peter, Unfortunately I can't get any pictures for you at the moment.  My boat is in Ontario and I'm in British Columbia until mid April. If you don't have pictures by then I'll be happy to take some.  In the meantime, I presume you have the cover for the back of the cockpit and you just have it off to access the radial drive wheel or something.  It looks like your platform / ladder might interfere.  Also, have you checked with the broker / previous owner to see if he still has the fold out section? Sorry I can't be of more help at the moment.  You could also try writing to this gentleman, he is liable to be somewhat familiar with the steel framing involved and could certainly build one if you were to pursue this project.

Thanks Tom. There was never a transom enclosure for this boat. I believe she was sent to Marblehead Ma. After the fire and was customized and finished there.
