A short article about caving and nationalism in the early 20th century.
"As cave exploration became more popular and speleology developed as an academic discipline, cave explorers were drawn into a problematic European nationalism."

The article ends:

Speleology fell away as a formal academic discipline after the war, Mattes explains. But international societies for speleology recovered, as the interdisciplinary nature of the research gained relevance later in the century.

The recovery of international societies of speleology is something that Johannes Mattes knows well. He was just reelected as Secretary General of the International Union of Speleology during the International Congress of Speleology in Brazil. He is an excellent historian and really good guy.
