Jeff,

The Microair controller doesn’t work with the CTM 16,000 BTU marine air conditioner contrary to published reports.

Below is my correspondence with the CTM people confirming that they experienced the same problem with the Microair controller.

Good morning Mr. Baker,

Sorry for my late reply.

I have not heard back from Micro-Air regarding this matter.

The best solution we can offer at the moment will be to either change the thermostat to an Elite II and keep using the external sensor or keep the Easy Touch with the internal temp sensor.

Anyhow, I sent a follow-up email to Micro-Air and I am waiting for their response. They are in the process of moving to a new location, so that might delay their response.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind regards,

Jorge,

It’s been months and I haven’t heard anything. How do you propose we get the unit to work as advertised?

Good afternoon Mr. Baker,

Nothing from Micro-Air yet. I will check with them again tomorrow and get back to you.

Should you need anything else, please let me know.

Kind regards,

Jorge,

Have you heard back from either Micro-Air or CTM concerning the issue with the alternate temperature sensor causing the unit to rapidly cycle on and off after the set temperature is reached when using the alternate temperature sensor?

Hi Jorge,

Sending email again since I haven’t heard back.

Have you heard back from Micro-Air?

Is there any controller that functions correctly with the CT16 using the alternate thermistor?

Hello Mr. Baker,

We tested one of the easy touch displays with the temperature sensor and are having the same problem.

We are trying to figure out a solution with Micro-Air and will let you know what they say. In the meantime, please use the unit without the external temp sensor.

I should get back to you soon.

Kind regards,

Jorge,

This link is perhaps what you were thinking about. It talks about cutting a jumper, but I don’t believe it applies to our situation since all components were manufactured after 2016 and I am using a 3k thermistor. Below is the exact text from the link:

Hi all,

I did a quick writeup on the AC installation project we did on Solstice #17 which was Jon Vez's former boat.

I didn't really proof read the attachment much and there are more areas I could finish up writing about at some point like more details on plumbing runs and details on the electrical and sensor hookup if anyone's interested.  I welcome any feedback, positive or negative since it was a learning experience and probably one of the more difficult boat projects I've done to date but happy with the result.

At night, all you hear is the fan in the vberth, and on low setting, it's pretty quiet. You don't really hear the pump or the compressor very much over the airflow itself, so I'd say this unit is much quieter than the 12kbtu Dometic DTU I installed in our old C320.

I have not measured the power draw yet, but the soft start stages the water pump, fan and compressor so they don't all kick on together.

If I were doing it over, I would not choose the Elite II controller.  I would go with the MicroAir Easy Touch/Smart Touch display unit since I'd love to be able to control it from my phone in the middle of the night or check on it when I'm not at the boat.

Cheers,
Jeff Hare

I'm going to lose some "manly man" points on this, but I ended up having the service guys at our marina install the CTM 16K unit to replace the old Pompanette unit.  I had the new one at the boat and started disconnecting the old Pompanette.  Then I said to myself, "I'm a retired software guy and this is a hardware problem!".  Not only that, but it was 95 degrees outside and worse inside the boat.  One phone call and a credit card payment later, and I am enjoying the cool inside the cabin!

By the way, the Pompanette thermostat had an 8 wire cable that works just fine with the CTM and Elite II thermostat.  Did not have to run a new cable.  The soft start module is wonderful!  Quiet and cool.

Thanks,

That makes me feel a bit better.  I think I"ll tweak the settings a bit.  I have had this odd occasional problem that a couple times early on, the compressor would start but the fan wouldn't.  For instance I could turn the fan on just fine but when I switch it over to AC, the fan would shut off, the pump would start, then the compressor but it's like it would forget to restart the fan.

So I ran the diagnostics and the whole thing worked great, fan started and stopped in all the models like it should.

I powered off the breaker and the next day I kicked on the AC and everything started up but the fan. So I figured I'd change the settings so that the fan would not cycle on and off with the compressor, but rather stay running as long as it was ok AC mode.

This worked perfectly, but at night I really want the fan to stop after it cools down to the set point and the compressor and pump both stop for a little extra quiet.

So I'll keep picking at it.  Nice having a 2 yr warranty to get this sorted.

To be fair I haven't called CTM or microair yet to seek advice, but it's on my list.

Jeff

Did anyone do this switch to the Easy-Touch Marine Control Display and the FX-2 Control board?  I was going through the history and saw this thread which makes me think this could be a fool's errand.    There are some detailed instructions on how to do this on the web but assumed that might not have worked.

I guess I never followed up on this...

So I didn't upgrade the control panel. When I called CTM they sent me a new control panel and that worked perfectly every time.  So there was likely some firmware or maybe hardware issue in my original control panel.  But in any event, I would still like a more modern control panel.
