to C-355 Google Group
Good evening everyone,

I just received a notification that the Catalina355.net website will expire on February 20, unless I renew and update my credit card..  When I purchased the domain and started the website fifteen years ago, my goal was to find ways to create community among the owners.  Initially, the website drew a lot of traffic to the Google group, but in recent years, the Google group has been the source of community and is drawing members on its own.

I am considering letting the domain expire and the website go away. The Google group is thriving.  I have not updated the website in over two years.

Does anyone feel strongly that we should continue this site?  If so, are you willing to take over the expense of the domain and be the webmaster?

If you feel strongly that the website should continue and want to take on the responsibility for maintaining it, please let me know.

Thanks,
Diane Walters

Is there a repository of the catelina materials or can that be stored in the Google group

I believe that most of the technical articles were pulled from Google group threads originally.  I will be happy to copy the contents of each page and create new threads for each topic as a backup.

Hi Diane,

What does it take to keep the group going?

Excellent question Allan. While having recently purchased my 355, have not had much interaction with the members. However, having read some of the posts and their responses, it’s an invaluable tool. Hoping ways are determined to keep this going. All the best

The Google Group is simple to maintain and has no associated cost. I also have someone who assists with its administration. Managing the group primarily involves approving new members and, on rare occasions, removing individuals who join only to sell non–Catalina C355 items or unrelated products.

At this point, there’s nothing we need to change regarding the Google Group. My concern last night was the website. I’m questioning the value of continuing to pay for the domain each year, especially since it no longer seems to provide meaningful benefit.

If you want it to sound warmer, firmer, or more formal, I can adjust it.

Thank you for all you have done, Diane. The site and group email system was a big party of feeling comfortable about switching from a 1992 Catalina 34 to the 355.

The group currently is linked through the C34.org site.  Would it make sense to move the site contents  under that umbrella?

first -- thank you for creating and administrating both the google group and domain.  I agree, the domain has very little traffic and google groups has worked well.   Sunsetting the domain makes great sense.

Thank you all for the thoughtful feedback—I truly appreciate your kind comments. I’m also grateful for the affirmation to “sunset” the site. Jonathan, you taught me a new application of the word. I’m adopting it right now! And, thank you as well for your help in administering the Google Group.

William, your suggestion makes perfect sense. Anyone with access to upload text or documents to the C34 site can easily do so.  There are likely many more threads in the Google group that would have much value also residing on the C 34 site. I still plan to upload the catalina355.net articles, PDF files, photos, etc.to the Google Group for those who may not be connected to the Catalina 34 group.  With the loss of our contact with experts in the factory, we need to safeguard the information that we have collected these past 15 years.

Thanks everyone,
Diane
