Stumbled upon this YouTube video that Pratical Sailor put out yesterday. Things are sounding grim at Catalina.  Hope this gets worked out. Apparently production has been temporarily halted so that they can get on better financial footing. The president of CY posted on Facebook a little over a week ago about this.

Yes, a concerning article when a company halts production, especially just a few months after its acquisition. I think we  need to carefully monitor what happens next as Catalina owners. This creates a chain reaction to owners, dealers, suppliers and Catalina's staff. For now, what we can review are crafted press release's that do not provide much insight. Whatever happens, Catalina and the new ownership must figure it out. It's too great a brand in the sailing community.

Sadly, things are apparently much worse than even revealed in that video. A week ago I managed to get through to our favorite company representative and was shocked at how dire things were at that time. Now, a week later, at least according to reports, everything is shut down and nobody is getting paid. And again, according to reports which you can read if you follow the links and comments to that YouTube video, the new owner has been evicted from the plant for a failure to make timely payments.

If correct, that's disturbing news....Things do not add up initially. Why would someone acquire a company and then a few months later basically shut its doors? But have the financial resources to purchase another boatbuilder (Tartan) during this period. Where was the diligence in the purchase(s)? Or what was the true intent in the acquisitions🤔.And where does it go from here? Many questions/concerns. Catalina owners should have been informed directly as an aside.  Meanwhile, some very good people work at Catalina and hope they get thru this, and quickly. As well as the company....

Unfortunately, I think we have seen the last Catalina come off the line.

Catalina needs a cash infusion to complete the several orders it has so they can recover that cash.

Reportedly how these deals were structured was 10% down and 90% on delivery , which again reportedly is not how Catalina did orders in the past.

Reardon was no financial genius on setting up these orders (apparently).

I came across this story over the weekend, https://loosecannon.substack.com/p/catalina-yachts-owner-evicted-from

Also saw practical sailor did a video on Catalina & Tartan's troubles this morning, on the practical sailor you tube channel.

Well, I have seen responses so far. Yes, you have to have humor in life, especially if you are a sailor......But these events are of significant concern.....

- Imagine if you are a fairly new boat owner and have a warranty... What will happen there other than a scripted PR speech from Catalina that they will process requests and they are on a "production pause".
- Imagine if you have a deposit on a new boat. Or one being built in progress.
- Imagine if anyone on this group chain decided to sell their Catalina and that company no longer exists. What will happen to your resale value? That hit home, did it not?
- Imagine if you have a boat 5 years old or less covered by Catalina's fiberglass warranty and in a year, real problems occur.
- Imagine what these recent actions have already created to the brand and not in a positive way.
- Imagine if you worked at Catalina presently
-Imagine if you were a Catalina dealer and had vessels in inventory or on order
-Imagine what vendors and part builders for our sailboats are saying or thinking, or for that matter doing.

The list goes on and on. You have to ask yourself many questions of which we probably will never know the answers too. Questions like what led Catalina to be in such a cash starved position? What was mngt doing or not doing? They sold to a person who defaulted on something as simple as rent and then was locked out after just a few months!!! Where was the due diligence in vetting any new purchasers financial qualifications? At least that's one of the articles posted, states. What were his goals and end result? There exists plenty of speculation and most are not good.
Where is the communication to Catalina owners re what's going on? Getting on YouTube is not the way to solely communicate to your clients and prospective buyers. I found out thru a friend who sent me the article. Is that how I should have found out? I think not....

This entire scenario was not only surprising, but it's a cluster. Look forward to hearing, then seeing what happens next, and in a positive way. I think the many thousands of Catalina owners think similarly, but I can be wrong. Yes, the founder and owner is no longer with us, but he built an organization focused on a number of key pillars and structure...What happened???? And more importantly, what's next!
