Starter Battery Location

I’m thinking about putting in a starter battery. I read over the info on here which is great, and got me thinking about my layout. I had couple questions though:

1) I noticed in the owners manual, although they never mention a 3rd battery, it does appear to be shown in one drawing. Does anyone have a battery here, or located one there. I was curious as to the cable runs, and logistics.

2) I also want to put in a battery monitor. I got the Victron BMV-712, but was curious as to where others have mounted the shunt.

3) This is more of an FYI, I noticed the owners manual for a 315 had a similar electrical configuration to what I’m hoping and sounds close to what others had done. Thought I would share that too.

4) Thinking about a TV for watching the Seahawks come fall. Better to get a 12VDC, or go inverted with 120V? Kind of thinking the latter so I can do a smart TV, which doesn’t seem to exist in the DC arena.

Any info, guidance, or random advice is appreciated.

I'm not sure where the starter battery is mounted, but I seem to recall people talking about next to the water heater.

As for the BMV-712, its a great choice. Victron makes some awesome products. I installed the shunt for mine in the battery compartment. There was just enough room above the batteries to put it horizontally.

House bank is made up of four Trojan T125 6V flooded batteries in Series/Parallel config.  480 AH.

I located my engine start battery in at the front of the lazarette on the floor.  This made the cable run to the alternator shorter and left me room near the water pump for a water filter and accumulator.

My 2019 Catalina 355 came with a factory TV. It uses an inverter and works great! Uses about 3 amps when running.

It also came with a small antenna mounted at top of mast. I would recommend you ask factory for what equipment they use when a factory TV is ordered.

BTW, the batteries shown in picture are Trojan 6V golfcart batteries so I am not surprised you want a start battery. My 2019 came with two 4D 12V batteries which work great as start batteries.

Jonathan, my starter battery is under the port side satee near the foreward bulkhead. There is a small cupboard under the satee which I had a section of plywood cut to fit and set the starter battery on it and tied it down. Used an AGM battery (as all mine are) so didn't have to worry about checking the water level. Stu Smith Pelican #80

Jon, my starter battery is an AGM Group 27 installed in the starboard cockpit locker on the shelf just in front of the holding tank.  I also have two 4D AGM batteries under the settee beside the nav station.  In my model, the two of them just barely fit in there with the shunt.  I also have installed a BMV-712 in the electric panel above.  Further, to make it even more fun, I have now installed a Victron Cerbo GX which is an amazing piece of technology.  It connects to the Axiom, the Victron Multi-plus inverter, the BMV and the internet.  The Cerbo allows so many things and I have only scratched the surface.  However, the main benefit that I was looking for was the battery data on the Axiom.  I will be enhancing the connections over time to include all tanks(the boat did not come with fresh water tank monitors), temperatures, A/C relay and bilge alarms.  Further, I got a discount on my boat insurance because it is recognized as a security device(due to GPS tracking, etc.).  Regarding watching the Seahawks, I highly recommend the inverter install but place it in the cockpit locker.  The fan on it will drive you nuts if you install inside the boat.  Let me know if you need any pics of any of this.

My factory installed TV w/ inverter, has the inverter inside the locker in the forward cabin. The A/B switch is there as well.

Not noisy at all and easy to mount TV on wall[starboard side]!

Ours is mounted the same and we just moved to a smart TV. It’s great!! It needed a different mounting and rerunning the wiring but well worth it!!

Take the original cover strip off and rerun the wire then manipulate it back together. It takes a while but it’s worth the effort 😎

Jon,

I installed a no maintenance AGM battery in the aft berth under the hatch closest to the center line. It meant building a little platform with feet sloped to accommodate the slope of the hull. I epoxied the platform to the hull and used tie down straps to secure the battery. I then ran the power lead to the head compartment where the raw water filter is located. I added a battery switch in there and then ran to the lug on the starter solenoid. I left the house connection on the solenoid as well. I don’t recall where I ran the ground lead but somewhere in the engine bay.

So, now I don’t connect the house battery to the engine for starting but I still can as the house connection to the starter is there as a back up. While I keep the starter isolated I could add it to the house batteries if needed for charging, which it never seems to need. Also, I then need to put the house on engine when under motor if I want to charge house batteries. I only do this if we are cruising as the house batteries are fine for day sailing.
