screens

[Bob Story]

I'd appreciate folk's experience and thoughts on screens. What have you done for screens in the companionway? Are the opening port screens meant to be left in when the port glass is closed? I left one in and found it leaked terribly during a significant storm.

Bob,
I take my screams out, found the same leaking problem.
I made a screen for my companion way. It fits over the door portion with Velcro and I slide the hatch closed.

As you found, the port screens aren't meant to be left in if you anticipate washing, rain etc. For now I'm using a 'Bug Buster' for companionway, but looking for a better solution.

I will be back down to my boat next weekend and will be more than happy to take pictures.
I have also installed an arch on the back of my boat to handle additional antennas, solar panels and an RIB that others might be interested in. Will include pictures of that as well.

I used an arch we saw at the Miami Boat Show. It is built by Atlantictowers.com and they call it in arch in a box. It came in three pieces and my son in law and I installed it in one day and it looks fantastic. Has a loading capacity of 400 pounds.

Regarding the companionway screen, I've contemplated making a folding door that could replace the teak door except with screens (similar to Zarcor doors, which I had on my previous boat, but without the need for the screens to be removable). Should be fairly straightforward to build either from wood or Starboard, using the existing doors as templates. Gotta think on that some more....

I've been thinking along the same lines. You probably know that the existing doors simply lift off the hinges, so should be fairly straightforward....

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. The Zarcor doors use the same hinge, so allowed quick removal to replace with the standard companionway boards when needed. Doesn't seem like it should be too difficult to build.

Thanks all for screen comments. It seems odd to design a boat where the port screens have to be fitted with each usage and even odder to provide no companionway screening mechanism even if as an option. However, as noted by others, the companionway door does come off easily and it would not be difficult to build something for there. I'm thinking winter project though given all the little tasks of adding various fiddly bits to a new boat. ;-)

I was initially as surprised as you were, that the ports could not be shut effectively with the screens in.

I just returned from a wet 450 nm single handed  trip up the Inside Passage to Bella Bella and back to home dock in Comox. . On the west coast, I find that I can leave the large vent in the salon open a crack and I leave the head port open- it means that the head does get wet but the boat is vented. It doesn’t prevent the early season mosquitos visiting.

I am also building a temporary companionway screen for the summer, but leaving the doors in place.

OK, this thread made me go to the garage and build a companionway screen. its primitive, but works.  Pictures attached.  It has a fixed frame that sits in the doorway without removing the regular doors.  When not in use, it stores next to the engine cover out of the way.  Weight and weather strip hold it in place.  It would have been nice if I had cleaned the bird poop before I took the picture....oh well,  Chris

Brad & Sandy, I tried to figure a way to cover the top, but it got complicated and would be hard to store. So, I went with just the screen door. The outside dimensions are: top 27.75", sides 27.25" and bottom 20.5". That leaves a little room for weatherstrip on the outside edges. The top slides over the weatherstrip and seals. I used 1x2" lumber and a screen mold strip to cover the stapled screen. Getting the angle cuts correct was a challenge. I made a full size template on paper to help me make the cuts. Chris

I know this is an old chain, but I appreciate it being available.   Given your comments I designed a solution that while not perfect is what we call GEPO - good enough push on.  Used PVC pipe, pipe clamps and screening.  We were not as precise as Chris, we folded trimmed outside edges on themselves along a line between end of poles and taped it.

A few years ago I bought a Sogeman 36"x72" companionway screen. Modified it slightly to snap into the fiberglass piece just above where the hatch slides in. Added a couple of pieces of Velcro as well. Does a good job keeping the bugs out.
