Many thanks to Lisa Brettmann, owner of Encore #83 for sharing a digital copy of the Catalina 355 Owner's Manual, and thanks to Gerry Douglas for granting us permission to post it to http://www.catalina355.net.

You'll find this PDF file in the Technical Section of the website.  Lisa pointed out that it comes in quite handy when downloaded to an iPad or other tablet computer.

A really helpful tool for keeping all of your manuals on your laptop and tablet is a product called Evernote—it’s free and I have no affiliation. It allows you to quickly store anything including all of your manuals on your devices and sync them automatically. With this pdf, I now have every manual for all of the systems and components on both my tablet and laptop.

You will find the manuals for items like the Selden/Furlex rig, all Raymarine instruments, and most importantly, the Yanmar Service manual at the respective web sites. Once you download to Evernote, you will have a ‘notebook’ of every manual you may need—much easier than keeping the hard copy on board….

Thank you for the Evernote tip.  Looks like a great application with lots of options.  I have a quick question on getting files saved to it.

The link below to download the pdf Owner's Manual just opens the file in Safari and all of my efforts to get it into a saved format on my desktop 

and into Evernote has been unsuccessful.  Any tips?  Oftentimes I have noted that the files do not actually download to the computer but just within 

the browser (Safari) and are gone when you close it.

Hi Steve,

Had the same problem with this particular download. Two ways to try: Download the PDF to your PC/laptop, then synch. I initially had a problem with this, so I went back to the iPad and when it opened in Safari, I hit the ‘email’ option and sent it to the Evernote email address you get when you install Evernote. Saved it as a ‘clip’ and then synched to my laptop. That worked. Not sure why this particular pdf didn’t drop right in.

Another really useful feature with EN is you can also store related photos. I have a bunch of photos of some of my boat projects which are now conveniently stored in the same place…hope this helps, but if not, let me know….

Hi Dianne,

after several of my 'learnings', usually the hard way, but greatly assisted by this Group, do you know how we could set up a shared Document or PDF so that content can be added to it from some of the posts in order to construct an 'unofficial owner's manual'. I thought of this the other day when I learnt of the toilet water inlet filter behind the panel inside the little locker in the head, and headed off to clean mine out (badly needed too). Some posts have real treasures of information or instruction but can be hard to locate amongst the posts, but could be cut/pasted into a single place. Others have listed spares to keep onboard, Jon's instructions for re-designing the batteries etc leap to mind. The Owners Manual is OK, but actually does not contain all the details re our C355s, hence a supplementary 'live' document that we keep edited as a group would be handy, especially if laid out in matching chapters to the official manual. Being queen of website use, I thought you might know if possible/feasible/easy.

The most sophisticated way would be to set up a free 'WikiTech' website where members can post and edit freely. Like the C34 folks have set up. The C30-ers are looking into the same thing.

Alternately a Google Docs site could be out up and anyone authorized could sign in and either post new documents, or edit a posted document - depending on the level of assess the author/doc administrator set up.

Great question, David.  I think this is greatly needed, but with my work demands, I am not in a postition to take that project on.

I would have replied with the exact same answer as Ken.  A wiki would be the ideal way to organize our technical knowledge.  A google doc is far less ideal.  While the google doc is easy on the front end, it would be much more difficult to find information when it is needed.

A Wiki is a perfect tool, but my experience with them says that we need someone who would set-up  a basic organizational structure and would keep an eye on the wiki to ensure that articles/help documents are added to the appropriate categories.  

Once a wiki is set-up, we can link it to the technical tab in the  http://www.catalina355.net/ website for easy access.

Is anyone willing to set-up the framework of a Wiki?  (Once that is done, anyone who would like to add to it can be set-up as an editor.)

I thought David was looking to post and have owners be able to edit it, adding additional content to the original document.

That could be easily done with a google doc cloud site, and one ms word or google doc format file, giving all member e-dresses permission, or individuals as requested.
That document could be searched as any word doc could be. An option would be to upload the CTY manual as a single file, or multiple files (per chapter) and add to/edit that as desired to remain current, or add new content. Very simple.

Of course, the same concerns are there as with a wiki, that is members posting content to the correct area (eg, strainer doesn't go under riggiing), in somewhat of a universally accepted'shered upon format (eg, no smily faces). But group policing usually helps there, because any can edit another's 'mistake.'

Also, sharing of the sign in to anyone, and who knows what gets edited. But all that is both the beauty and the bane of a wiki website.

I have a cloud site where I post documents, but I haven't tried editing them on the site. I suppose google locks the file while one is editing it, so there's not another edit going on at the same time and causing conflicts.

There's also several ready made, pre-hosted, wiki site providers, where the wiki scripts are in place and all individuals need do is start posting content and edit as desired. They create their own structure and layout of the content - again with public (ie, group) policing of that.

I'll locate that info-which I had when Mac Munger started looking into a C30 wiki site.

In short, a down an dirty unofficial, editable Manual 2.0 could be out up immediately, along with the inherent limitations. All it would take is a google doc account, and sharing the link to the cloud site.

A wiki site would be more involved, depending whether it was self hosted or hosted somewhere else.

Ken -  I would support either a wikitech or google docs although I am not familiar with the former. I had hoped to start gluming together some of the gems from this group for the website: catalina355.org under the menu Technical Info. However, I went hiking for a month in the UK so didn't get to it. :-/

It w/b good to hear from the others as to how to best accomplish this. Certainly a restricted google docs site would do this as long as we got the hierarchies well defined.

We've had great success with our Catalina 34 Tech wiki.  When we set it up, our former late Commodore Jon Schneider and i spent a LOT of time developing the categories. IIRC, there are about 22 of them.  We asked ourselves the questions: "Where does alternator go?  Electrical or engine?"  No matter what you do, there will always be some overlap.  In order for you to avoid reinventing the wheel, you should feel free to borrow or even just copy those categories.

Inasmuch as we are supporting and managing your Mainsheet magazine and IA membership lists, we again invite you to utilize our C34 website, as some of you have done.  We have found our Forum software to be very good and highly searchable.  Our Tech wiki is invaluable.  I see no reason that you couldn't simply set up a separate portion of our wiki for your own use.

Please let me know if you'd consider it.  We're here to help.

Hi all,

I've started a wiki, without really knowing what I'm doing! Here's the link, below.

I've set it so that anybody with this can (theoretically) enter it.

Click on Supplementary Manual, and then in top right corner there's an edit button (pencil shape), and don't forget to SAVE anything you've done.

Now I've just spent 30 minutes on it, so don't be disappointed by small amount of content to date. Have started organising by headings.

It is just like editing a document.

Ok, copy and paste, then clean up, your favourite "gems" from the posts in our Group's site into this wiki.

I also uploaded a file, you'll see, which is an article on folding props. So we can add to this list other articles of interest.

Great David.. The only way to do it, is to grab the horns and DO IT. Build it (or start it as the case may be) and they will come.

Members who think about adding to the wiki - I recommend looking thru the C34.org tech wiki (link to it is at the top of the main page) and see the type of content, boat specs, engine info, etc., that's possible to make available to everyone.

Also remember to show off your owner mods, or factory options that other owners may want to see or install.
