Yesterday we had a raft up and 14 seniors had appetizers and drinks aboard our boat.  During which the bilge pump cycled 5 times (not much coming out).  I think the problem is water entering thru stern below the swim ladder (pic attached) as the weight was enough to submerge the thru hull (although intermittently).   Has anyone had such a problem?

On my boat that particular outlet is connected via a hose to the propane locker to vent any gas out. If the hose is loose or fell off then you would definitely get water through there. You’ll have to go down into the starboard aft lazarette and take a look.

Crazy question but you don't happen to have an automatic “electronic”bilge pump installed that cycled?  It's a manual float type?

The other thing I'm thinking is.… 14 seniors.… Drinks…. Lining up to relieve themselves in your bilge! 😳

Did go down into starboard lazarette.  Connection looks good and tight ( of course can't rule out a leak).  Your idea makes most sense.  Here is the pic. I had wondered about leak at the stuffing box but it was dry and pump has not cycled since the raft up while we have been on board, sailing x 2.

I wonder if you could simulate the situation with a hose just flowing water over the thru-hull on the outside of the boat. Perhaps the thru-hull is not sealed up against the hull. Either that or invite a dozen people over for drinks!

Maybe the check-valve was allowing back flow which caused the pump to cycle on and off.

Finally got to it .. connected hose to through hull while I was in starboard aft lazerette -  no water entered and when my removed hose water came back to through hull

Mystery remains -  guess it will be drinks

Problem diagnosed and resolved.  With dinghy, full tank, davits the stern was weigthed down.  Now the problem 9 months later became more than a mild issue.  The bilge was cycling while starting our cruise.  I crawled into the starboard stern lazerette and shot this.  Turns out the propane lazerette thru hull was not cracked so the hose inside did not reveal the leak.  The caulking was dry and minimal.  Recaulking resolved the problem as we sailed thru 16-20 knots with waves 2-3.5 feet over the weekend without issues.

pic attached as not able to post video.  arrows to suggest motion.

One thing to think about: If the propane locker vent thru-hull is submerged, the locker can't vent properly.

Thanks
It is only submerged when moving.  It wss fixed while at the dock, well above water even with dinghy, davits and full tank.
So I will need to think about cooking while at sea, but not at anchor.

Jonathon,

The vent in the locker is to vent the heavier than air gas that is leaking from a loose connection.  If that’s a problem, it is actually LESS of an issue when you are cooking and the gas is “leaking” to the stove through the intended route, as the pressure has an outlet other than the leaky spot.  If you have a loose seal somewhere in the gas locker it will leak even when the stove is not in use.  So, the vent should never be below waterline for more than a few minutes.

Thanks Ken and Delbert.
I am surprised that dinghy, davits, fuel a 75 lb dog and couple weighing less than 300 lbs could submerge it, nothing more than cushions in aft quarters.  Oh I forgot, do have code zero in aft lazerette, that is easy to remove and store elsewhere.

Great convo about this issue, thanks! Just going back to the raft up, 14 guests at an avg 160 lbs is equal to a long ton of added weight, so we should all be keen to watch for waterline changes and any associated unexpected issues when onboarding like that!

Love this group!
