We tried a new way to insulate the fridge this year and it worked very well. I had a roll of this 10mm SealTech foam core insulation that we got online and use for window inserts in our RV.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CS2YGBFM It’s more rigid than the usual reflectix style insulation. It takes well to cutting, scoring and folding so we made cut a piece that could be folded into a box shape to fit into the lower section of the fridge.
As some may recall from a post a couple years ago, we removed the vertical divider in the fridge and added a continuous stainless grill shelf from the sink edge to the “wine” bottle holder under the freezer and use some trays we can slide around on the shelf to group and hold items. Below, we keep all the drinks, and misc. food in containers as there is enough room for canned drinks stacked and taller jugs of drinks. I think it’s about 10” of clearance in the lower area but it extends the entire length of the fridge. This eliminated the really deep hole that everything used to drop into in front of the freezer that couldn’t be accessed from the lower door. We can also access some things on the upper shelf from the lower door. Also as I posted earlier we made a hinged insulated marine vinyl door that greatly helps reduce the temp losses out through the lower access door.
Since we keep a remote thermometer in the fridge that reads on an indoor/outdoor clock-thermometer, we noticed that the fridge stayed a more even temp and didn’t seem to run as often, but I didn’t track that with any kind of watt-hour meter. We also have an insulated panel below the lift-up panel similar to the one in the lower door that helps reduce losses above the freezer as well.
We planned to add a little IP-65 fan to move air around and may still do that, but the temp stayed pretty constant without it this past 3 week trip. Our fridge runs all season long.
All in all, we find the fridge much more usable in this configuration. Hope this helps some of you having trouble keeping the fridge cool. Reach out if you have any questions.
