Hello,

Does anyone know about how Cantera calculates blow off conditions for the flame? I am getting solutions over a wide range of mass fluxes and I'm wondering if anyone has any insight on the underlying physics of the flame stabilization? For a 1 dimensional flame there should theoretically be only one mass flux in which the flame would stabilize, but I'm wondering why I get such a wide range (well over an order of magnitude). Thanks!

Hi Ben,
Burner (stabilized) flames have an inherent stabilization mechanism through heat loss to the upstream burner plug. Blow-off is experienced in 1D when the mass flux exceeds the one corresponding to the adiabatic laminar flame speed. In practice, you either see cellular flame structures or blow-off beyond that point (depends on the Lewis number). For some of the background, I wrote a paper that touches on that some time ago. While radiation effects go beyond your question, Figure 3 shows some Cantera results (plus a simplified model) that should provide some insight - see https://www.researchgate.net/publication/256687586_Radiation_effects_on_flame_stabilization_on_flat_flame_burners Figure 3. Hope this helps,

Also note that preheating the reactants will produce stable flames (and solutions in BurnerFlame) for higher mass fluxes: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0010218012003100

Colin,
Good to hear from you! Yes, good point; preheating will definitely
extend the flammable range ...
