Time Stamp Error

Hi,

When I'm trying to upload media, many of my camera trap stations are producing the time stamp error, saying that the image date is out of the date range, when it is not. The date on the image itself that was programmed into the camera is the correct date and there seems to be no rhyme nor reason to which ones this happens to and which go through fine (its not the photos at either end of the date range, but in the middle). I see that there was a similar question to this previously, but I'm afraid I didn't quite understand the answer. You said it was a case of editing the EXIF metadata? But I'm not sure how to do this.

Thank you for any advice you may have,

Clara

Hi Clara,

Would you be able to send me an example image which is failing to upload, along with the start and end dates for the camera trap?  I'll be able to use this to get a better idea on what might be happening.

It'd be best if you could put the image into a .zip file before attaching. Google has a habit of modifying the image, which makes investigating difficult.

Hi Chris,

Sorry for the delayed response, I was just confirming that it was ok to be sharing these images online.  I have attached the single image in this upload which appears to have succeeded (I_00001a.JPG), two with the Timestamp error (I_00001b.JPG and I_00009b.JPG) and one with the upload error (I_00009a.JPG). I have logged the session as from the 21st March 2017 to the 27th May 2017, and all of the time stamps on the photos themselves fall within these dates.

Thank you so much in advance for any help you might be able to provide,
Let me know if any other information would be useful,

Clara

Hi Clara,

Thanks, though it looks like Google Groups has modified these images when uploaded, so I'm not really able to see what might be happening there.

It'd be best if you could put the images into a .zip file before attaching or alternatively, email them to me directly.

Hi Chris,

Sorry about that. I did actually send you an email with these in on the 27th of October under a slightly different email address, but will try resending it now.

Thank you,

Clara

Hi,

I have the exact same problem. I already tried to modify the creation and modification dates of the images files. But neither of that worked. Still the same error.

Help would be very much appreciated.

Best,
Thomas

Hi Thomas,

Could you please email me directly with:
  • An example of an image which fails to upload, and
  • The session date range where the image was to be uploaded

Thanks,

-Chris

Hi Thomas,

I've just released a new version of Camelot which I expect will fix this issue.

Let me know how it goes.

Hi Chris,

Just to let you know that this new version seems to have fixed all my problems! Sometimes have to close the window and start it up again if I'm doing a lot of uploads at once, but have no succeeded in uploading everything that doesn't have a genuine timestamp error.
On that topic, I don't suppose you know of a simple way of changing the metadata for a large number of photos on a Mac?

Thank you so much,

Clara

Hi Clara,
Chris said> Camelot is using the "DateTime" field (0x0132 from the EXIF standard) for timestamps.  This might also be referred to as "Modify Date" (not to be confused with File Modification Time).

Depending on your technical savvy, you could also try EXIFTool
https://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/
This is the ultimate in metadata modification.
https://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/TagNames/EXIF.html
has 0x0132 listed as "ModifyDate"

You may have to try a few to work out what works for you.

And please report back and let us know what worked for you, so that others can learn from you.

Regards
Heidi

Hi Chris,

thanks a lot for the update and it did indeed fix the problem!

Now I should be able to release it to the team and let them finally work with your solution.

Best,
Thomas

Hello Heidi,

I had a problem with false images' metadata and used ExifTool successfully to change the "Modify Date" of multiple images

- I downloaded, unzipped and renamed exiftool(-k).exe to exiftool.exe
- navigated in the command line to the location of exiftool.exe
- typed in exiftool "-ModifyDate+=9:4:14 5:5:5" pathtoFolderwithImages in order to change the date to the future (9years,4months,14 days, 5hours,minutes and seconds)

Thanks for the hint!

Florian

I tried a few options to solve this issue, and whilst it was easy to change the date modified, getting that “Modify Date” field to alter as a bit tougher to figure out. I ended up using this simple application (https://www.relliksoftware.com/exifdatechanger/), which worked perfectly and is very straightforward to implement (...I then used EXIFTool to check that it had worked, but this should not be necessary). And bingo, those bad-timestamp images are now happily residing in Camelot!

Hi There,

I'm having an issue with time stamps.
I set up traps on the 13th of October, to gather dissertation research, and made sure the date was correct but something caused the traps to revert back to their original dates.
I've tried using exif date changer to change it to the correct date however the software is still saying the image is out of the date range?

I have attached an original file with its altered counterpart.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated

Hi Aiden,
Please can you share the photos inside a zip file. Unfortunately google modifies the photos metadata.
.

Hi Aiden,

Sorry for the delayed response. The date Camelot detects for the
attached "adjusted" image is 2023-10-26 5:58:00. Is that what you would
expect?

If so, can you please share a screenshot of the error, and the dates for
the camera trap session you're attempting to upload to?

Thanks,

Hi Chris,

Thank you for the response. It appears the dates were off by 1 number but it is all sorted now.
Thank you for opening my eyes to the adjusted times.

Cheers,
