If you are thinking of doing a permanent ride with a Santa Cruz start/finish, many of our roads have been battered by California's recent winter storms. In particular, Stage Road, to the north of Pescadero and south of San Gregorio, is closed due to a large landslide. It is not expected to open soon.

Most permanents that travel north from Santa Cruz to San Gregorio, La Honda, and Half Moon Bay, and El Granada will be affected by this closure. (It can be gotten around by traveling Hwy 1 between San Gregorio and Pescadero.) In addition, HIggins-Purisima Rd, to the south of Half Moon Bay, is also closed at present.

(The one 200k route we still have open is the Gray Whale Ramble because it stays on the coast highway and avoids Stage Road. The 100k PIgeon Point Ramble could be ridden by staying on the coast highway and making it an out-n-back via Pescadero Creek Road or Bean Hollow Road to connect Pescadero to the coast highway.  Gazos Creek Road currently has some heavy mudflow in spots but should be passable on a bike before long?)

To the south, all Santa Cruz permanents use San Andreas and Trafton Roads (south of Aptos). Further south of Marina, on the Gonzales 200k, River Road and Gonzales-River Road are closed in spots. Hopefully these will be cleaned up and open before long.

Be sure to check the appropriate county road closure notifications before you sign up to do a RUSA permanent in our region. Also be wary of broken tree limbs, mudflow, and other debris that is clogging some of the road shoulders we normally ride on.

Hey Bill

We drove Gazos Creek on Sunday afternoon south to north and the road was 100% clear.
It was closed but at the intersection in the non brevet direction.

We drove it today and it was open, but with thick mud in a few spots where the hillside was coming down.

I wouldn’t want to tackle them on my bike currently but hopefully in a while it will be better.

I would say it’s rideable, but you’ll get muddy.
