Hello,

I may have an issue with Teams but it seems that the chat box is not available on Teams to write questions.

Also, I want to apologise: I am in hybrid attendance and I could not make it to Bergamo.

Best,

Sara

I have the same issue, as the chat does not appear on Mac laptops (but it does on desktop computers). Also, the sound is not shared, so online participants can only see you and not hear your presentation, unfortunately.

This is really interesting research Sara. To what extent do you think the proliferation of metaphorical language in fiction books is a reflection of how it is possible for us as humans to talk about death? I can't think of many expressions that are not in fact on some level metaphorical, because we don't actually fully understand what happens (ontologically, biologically) when we die.

This is really fascinating stuff though - I've been thinking recently about how to talk about death with my 4.5 year old, because he knows the words 'death' and 'dead' and uses them in play, but in a way that doesn't quite appreciate the magnitude of what they might mean in the 'real world'...

Thank you, Laura. I completely share your point regarding the need to use metaphors as a means to make sense of death. As you point out, probably the question is whether we can make sense of death at all without metaphors. I found it particularly interesting that non-fiction books need to include metaphors beyond the biological theme to explain the grieving process and moving on with living. This may come at odds with the recommendations from the literature, which tends to prioritise realistic explanations and suggests avoiding identifications of death with rest, which could potentially trigger a fear to go to sleep among small children. For me, it shows that although biologic/mechanistic portrayals may be the preferred ones, for being more realistic, they do not seem to be enough for people, neither as explanatory devices nor in terms of making sense of the phenomenon.

Thanks Sara, that all makes sense. Maybe we need the more biological/mechanistic explanations to begin with, then we can go back to the comfort of euphemism! ;) I'd love to read a published version of this if you have/have plans to?

Hi, this is a (technical) question for James Balfour: how did you collect your dataset? Did you use an API? Very interesting presentation, by the way!

Also, to Carly: how were you able to ascertain that very general adjectives in your dataset,  like big or large, were actually used in the context of obesity? I understand that you relied on manual observation of concordance lines, but how could that be feasible when you have thousands and thousands of results?

Hi again all, just to say, folk watching the Health panel might also be interested in my talk on the language of infant feeding at some point which you can find over in the grey corpus and discourse panel on the programme...

I am going to have to watch Carly et al's talk later, but it looks brilliant.

Super excited for Tara's now too!

Hello, this is a comment (more than question) for Gavin Brookes --I am wondering whether taking a diachronic perspective on the conceptualisation/understanding of dementia would help in any way (maybe you are already doing it). I have the impression that, already at the outbreak, dementia is understood by the outcome in the final stage. It can be argued that this happens with many illnesses, particularly the ones without a cure, unlikely to be cured, or chronic. This emphasis on the final stage seems to me a potential big trigger of stigma; maybe breaking down dementia in the different stages, and focalising on the diagnosis, treatments available and early and mid-stages, could help to provide a more comprehensive picture of the syndrome.

Hi, this is a question/idle rambling thought for Tara, which I did post in the Teams chat but don't think it got through.
I love this research, and I would be interested to see how these sorts of transformational contrasts in the personal stories of (presumably cis?) people feel about their weight loss compares with how trans people talk about their journeys of transition e.g. in 'coming out' narratives... of course there will be differences since there are different types of stigma attached to these identities, but I don't know if it's something worth investigating at some point? Anyway I really enjoyed your talk, thank you!

Hi Cecilia,

Sorry - I'm only seeing this now. A boring answer I'm afraid - I simply collected it manually by copying and pasting each thread into a plain text file. I only looked at posts over a period of two weeks, so it wasn't too onerous to do. For a larger, more representative sample, the API route is the way to go!

Kind regards,

James
