Don’t fret over China’s new climate targets The ambitions of its clean-tech industry matter more than any humdrum pledges

It is a huge moment for the world’s biggest polluter. China’s steel mills, factories and coal-fired power stations pump out billions of tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. At the same time, massive spending on clean-energy technologies continues and China’s emissions are starting to dip.

The best way personally to contribute to China's reducing its emissions is: but nothing made in China.  Try it for a month.  Good luck.

I do fret over Canada's climate targets — a  false start — with no way evident to me that they will be met and no sign that our relatively new government understands.

Cheers,
John

Since almost everything non-edible is made in China, this challenge translates into "buy nothing except groceries in a Month".  I think I could operate in this mode for a few days or even a week.   Doing it for a month would be almost impossible.

On another note:  My son, who is staying with us for a few weeks, accused me of spending money on motion detector lights and not saving money on energy.  Of course, he was not aware of the reductions in the electricity consumption when automating low intensity floor level illumination of places that are being transited (hallways, kitchen, bathroom, stairways, bedrooms) that also turn off automatically after 20 seconds when motion ceases.   Compare the energy consumption with manually switched lights that are high intensity ceiling mounted to cover wide areas while reading your book.   These lights are often left needlessly energized for very long periods of time as there are few nearby walls with relevant switches.  Yes, it takes a few years to have a ROI but in this case home energy is my hobby and most hobbies or sports do not cry out for a ROI.   Hence walking around our home at night is an illuminating experience.    Further, since I have solar energy paired with batteries configured to sell energy at a high price and buy overnight at a very low rate means I make money.  But this conversion from kWh to money is a distortion of the energy fact that  consumption didn't change, just the cost shifting purchases to lower rates.

The use of motion detector lights changes the kWh energy consumption in a 24 hour period.

Hi All
We should not forget the fact that a large part of the global emissions, as a historic process - be it per person, per nation, per hemisphere is not Chinese alone, but based on other material dialectics.

Is prescient here to understand that the wealthiest population groups, allover the world, have disproportionately influenced present-day climate change. Have disproportionately influenced world policies, world share and all it’s benefits, for a long while now.

“Link emissions inequality over the period 1985–2020… regional climate extremes using an emulator-based framework. We find that two-thirds (one-fifth) of warming is attributable to the wealthiest 10% (1%), meaning that individual contributions are 6.5 (20) times the average per capita contribution.” (Nature.com). Emissions from the wealthiest 10% based in the United States, Canada, Qatar, and China alone, led to a two- to threefold increase in heat extremes across vulnerable regions (2015-2020). They call it “Carbon Inequality” absolutely in-sync with every form of inequality within capitalism.

It is a no-brainer that severe damage to global ecosystems over time has happened in reality because of the historical process, of capitalism, productivism and infinite economic growth, that has brought great benefits for a few at the cost of everyone else and the entire planet.
