Hi everyone,

Saw this in a discussion about protected bike lanes and was wondering what everyone thought about it. They are little bumps of thermoplastic on the line. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLdVClf4wJE It does look like it would help discourage drifting or cutting corners, but I could imagine it might run a risk of being slippery or causing a cyclist to lose control from the fact that they are a bunch of small bumps.

From the great minds that brought us rumble strips. Looks even more dangerous for cyclists who edge ride.

"Rumble Stripes” (on the lines)  are better than "Rumble Strips" in the bike lane - but this is on the edge of the travel lane - no bike lane or shoulder…
Looks like it might be better than rumble stripes pressed or gouged into the asphalt.
Lane departure is a very common cause of crashing motor vehicles and these look like they would make a bit of sound as a driver drifts over them…

I think these little dots of Thermoplastic paint could be placed on the left side of a Class II Bike Lane Buffer to warn motorists that they are drifting. Then the entire buffer can be used by cyclists in addition to whatever width of Bike Lane is provided.
I'm very interested to hear what the rest of you think?
A better alternative to Plastic Posts and/or asphalt berms?
Not possible because NACTO guidelines haven't endorsed them?
Better/worse than rumble strips?
Nothing is needed because most cars have a lane departure alarm? Our 8 year old car has this feature?
Should there be a CABO recommendation?

Please reply ASAP.

SANDAG will be coming to the Carlsbad Traffic Safety and Mobility Commission to present their regional transportation plan. Their vision for bikes is almost exclusively Class IV to replace existing Class II on all regional roads.

I've ridden over those rumbled white thermoplastic lines and they're not too bad.
I want to see a standard for their creation, depth, length, width. But since many cars DON'T have lane departure warnings, since no motorcycles do, and for that matter since a cyclist might be wandering while playing THEIR cellphone, these on the leftmost line of a buffered BL seem like a viable thing.
NOT recommended for the left edge of a non-buffered,i.e. traditional BL.
