Respected Scholars,
As Chanakya Font is a popular font, well established among devanagari publishing industry, one needs to convert Unicode to Chanakya for sending any writing to publishers. There are some websites which offer to do this conversion. But I find that the Chanakya output turns out to be some gibberish. I installed Chanakya fonts on my PC  but it looks like there is a compatibility problem. Obviously my knowledge is meagre in this area and I would be grateful for any guidance in this matter.
Thanks and regards,
GSS Murthy

Chanakya fonts are copyrighted.

Please buy a copy of their software from Summit India (http://summitindia.com/) which can convert to and from Unicode.

Thank you Nityanandji for this valuable piece of information. I went to SummitIndia website, but I could not locate anything specific to Chanakya Font.
I would love not to buy any software if a "for free" option is available. I located a website
image.png
If I input Unicode text (HTML option) it does give devanagari text in the output window, but there is no marked difference between unicode input and "Chanakya" output. When I paste it back to a word file, the font window shows it as Mangal only. I wonder if the web-app has really converted input Unicode(Mangal) to Chanakya. I am just reporting my observation so that I could be further guided.
Thanks and Regards,
Murthy

Murthy Mahodaya,

I have had lots of problems with Devanagari fonts. Most of these fonts cannot be used on the net, email etc.

I would suggest you buy fonts from 4C plus company. They charge you about Rs 5 thousand and give you about 60 fonts which can be used anywhere. You may contact

Mr Mahesh   09953223733

Invest this money, you will never have any problems later.

For those who may not be aware, please do check out https://fonts.google.com/

It has a lot of fonts, all/most free. You may even find free fonts that match professional ones as close as 90 to 98%, which means you can use them for your websites as well, or for personal use. And don't need to pay for the professional fonts.

It has many Unicode devanagari fonts as well, that have varying amount of ligatures. https://fonts.google.com/?subset=devanagari

There are many fonts that are similar to Kruti fonts as well, and also Sanskrit99

Vesper Libre is one such font.

Thanks,
Shashi

1.      Annapurna SIL includes full support for Unicode 7.0 Devanagari ranges, including Indic numerals and currency symbols.
(https://software.sil.org/annapurna/support/faq/) -  Annapurna fonts may be downloaded free from link: https://software.sil.org/annapurna/
The usage depends upon the installation of graphite resources.

The challenges of 'Proper representation of Samskruth as a Language proper, with its full needs met' are difficult to meet in the  font line of solutions .  Some of these challenges have been listed at link : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Components_for_Unicode

Earlier Senior researchers did address and provided partial solutions (-Omkarananda, Maharshi Mahesh Yogi Team, CDAC, Sri Lipi and many others  and many Indian researchers and institutions). There seems to be no final, viable, cost effective, deployed India wide,  indigenous solution on hand till date. It  seems that the problems are not in the 'branches' ( like the font, rendering) , but  are rooted deeper  !  The ' open source Free Linux line also has equally deeper problems).

This issue calls for  ab initio addressing the basic questions :

              (a) 'How is current Devanagari  script  display anchored research best suited to  achieve  the requirements of  'Samskrutham as a Programming  Language  for Computers ?  Using regulations of  Paninian rule base' ?
Pl.  Remember  current roman alphabet script in current computing standards are not fully accommodating / supporting  the  full right use of all the IPA symbols, diacritics, or accent markers even for roman script languages. What to say of non-roman script brahmi langauge families?  OCR approach may address 'Search a Text' but will it help voice - grammar process issues ?

               (b) Is the statement 'Sanskrit is best suited for Computers (since 1984 ?!) limited to drive research- investments   to develop Unicode compliant  fonts for devanagari script? Is it enough to claim  success in  Sanskrit computational Linguistics?

The  discussion on these points may be made with me in  off  line  mode as it involves deeper issues and  investment - priorities with a vision for safeguarding the future of 'Sanskrit in Digital devices' . It is also answering the question : ' Who should really, rightfully, ultimately holds control on Samskrutham' ?  Government, Private agencies, Communities, Corporate, Ashram and Mathas ?  Who ??
Would attachment to  pride of language drive investment support for research and technology implementation or luxury of working with freebies will comfort ? Answers to these points will decide the future  options in this engagement.

The subhashitakaara  explained this paradigm ( mind set towards Samskruth)  as the interest in a  full grown mature tree (samskrutham)  for  a gardener ( Water the tree to get fruit and grow a garden) , carpenter ( Cut the tree to make furniture)  and a fuel seller (  uproot and chop the tree to get  fuel for burning).

Regards

Dr. Damodara Chaitanya Dasa Ji

Hare Krishna Hare Rama

I would like to know if Summit India has released Chanakya BBT fonts for free use. If no, then whether permission has been taken from Summit India to release the font files to public.

In 2015 and 2016, I had bought the Chanakya Sanskrit font from Summit India. This font which was slightly different from the Chanakya BBT font developed for the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust. From my interactions with Divyendu Gupta and Shyam Sunder at Summit India then, I had learned that both fonts were not free for public. When I bought Chanakya Sanskrit (and not Chanakya BBT), I signed an agreement with Summit India which clearly said that the font files cannot be shared with public. Things may have changed now, as this was the case three years ago.

Why do I take pains to write this email? There is an unbelievable amount of hard work involved in typeface design for Sanskrit (with hundreds of glyphs for conjunct consonants). I learned this the hard way as I tried (and failed) to design a Sanskrit font twice based on the Nirnay Sagar Press typeface. The first time I tried doing everything myself (with Inkscape, GIMP, FontForge, and Python) and the second time I tried this with a design firm, Three Dot Designs. After many months of intense hard work, the attempts were aborted. I had underestimated the amount of design and technology work that goes in designing fonts. Therefore, I feel it is only fair that firms like Summit India copyright their Sanskrit fonts and we as students/authors of Sanskrit respect their copyright.

If the Chanakya BBT font has been made free and authorized for public release by Summit India, I would be very happy person. But if it is not the case, I request you to please not share the font files publicly. Just as my publisher would not like PDFs of my books to be shared publicly (and may even sue people for doing so), font design firms will certainly not like unauthorized sharing of font files.

Thanks, Nityananda Misra

An outfit called Indiatyping.com  does talk about free distribution.

It says Hindi Chanakya font.

Dear Prof Bijoy Mishra Ji

Two things

1) The file provided has only one TTF, which is supposedly the original Chanakya font (a Hindi font with one weight only), very different from Chanakya Sanskrit or Chanakya BBT (Sanskrit fonts, with four weights: normal, italic, boldface, and bold italic)

2) Even the original Chanakya font, to the best of my information, is not free. The Chanakya fonts are extremely popular and are used by many newspapers and publishers (including Gita Press). But they are not free.

So most likely India Typing is not authorized to distribute the font file for free use.

Thanks, Nityananda Misra

I just noted it.
I am still with the old Omkarananda Ashrama fonts in Sanskrit 2003.
Long time ago in 1988, I helped with the design of an earlier incarnation of ILEAP.
The developer sold it to CDAC etc and became a monk (literally)!.  He was a brilliant computer scientist.
