Shakalya was a disciple of Satyasri and belonged to the school of Paila. He was a contemporary of Yajnavalkya. According to Brahmanda Purana, once during the Ashvamedha Yajna, king Janaka wanted to know who was the greatest brahmana called as Brahmistha among all those present there. So, he brought a thousand cows, gold, jewels and servants to his court and announced that whoever considered himself the most knowledgeable might come forward and take away all these. A commotion started among the sages who all started debating with each other. Suddenly Yajnavalkya asked his disciples to arrange for taking away all the wealth to his ashrama. Seeing this, the sages challenged him to prove that he is the greatest. AswalaUddalaka AruṇiKahola KaushitakiGargi and the others who were present asked him several questions and he answered all of them. Finally, Yajnavalkya told Shakalya that he wanted to give him a chance too. Shakalya asked him several questions related to kama and Yajnavalkya answered all of them. When all his questions ended, Yajnavalkya told Shakalya that now he will ask a question, but there is a condition. If Shakalya cannot answer the question correctly, he will die immediately. Shakalya accepted the challenge. However, when Yajnavalkya asked him a question related to kama, Shakalya did not know the answer and so he died there.

I am looking for the debate between shAkalya & yAjnavalkya in detail.

Thanks

Namaste

In the following book on Bridharanyaka Upanishad Bhashya of Shankaracharya, there is a long introduction in English by Sri Swami Maheshanandagiri, Sri Dakshinamurti Mutt, Varanasi.

From page 42 of the printed book (inside the pdf) up to page 47 first paragraph is the material about Shakalya and Yajnavalkya:

https://www.centreforbrahmavidya.org/acharyas/sri-shankara-bhagavatpada/upanishad-bhashyam-vol-3.html?v=2.1#

One may not get a very clear idea by reading just this.  One may benefit more by studying the Shaakalya Brahmana of this Upanishad in third adhyaya, ninth brahmana along with the Shankara bhashya and Anandagiri's gloss thereon.  There are English translations of this too by Swami Madhavananda of the Advaita Ashrama.

One can also study the Vartika of Sureshwaracharya on the above portion of the Bhashyam. This comes with Anandagiri's gloss too.  One may also listen to the class of Sri Mani Dravid Sastrigal, in Tamil, of the line-by-line Shankara Bhashya available here:

There are many classes here and one will have to listen to the recordings one by one to take a complete tour of the Shaakalya Brahmana.
