नमो विद्वद्भ्यः 

Normally महान्.ऋषिः becomes महर्षिः.

But sometime there may be an exception, and  महाऋषिः may be used.  

This disregards the convention that when there is समासः, सन्धिः is must.

Please see the rule 6.1.128 ‘ṛtyakaḥ’ (ऋत्यकः), which allows for optional ‘prakṛtibhāva’ (प्रकृतिभाव) in case of a sandhi between an ‘ak’ (अक्) and ‘ṛ’ (ऋ) in the opinion of Śākalya. Example from the Siddhāntakaumudī—सप्तऋषीणाम्, सप्तर्षीणाम्।
