Dear list members

There are at least 90 known commentaries on the Tarkasangraha as per the appendix in the excellent English translation of the work by Mm V N Jha (ISBN 978-93-80864-03-7, CIFSS, 2010). Have all these been published? By any chance would anybody have a list of all published commentaries or commentaries available on archive on the work?

Thanks, Nityananda

Thank you so much, Ajit Ji, for this marvelous list of commentaries on the Tarkasaṃgraha.  The other work that has a very large number of commentaries is Mammaṭa's Kāvyaprakāśa.  The number of commentaries is a kind of measure of the popularity of a given work.  For some reason, introductory works on Mīmāṃsā like the Mīmāṃsā-Paribhāṣā and Mīmāṃsā-Nyāya-Prakāśa don't have such a large number of commentaries.  Even the Vedānta-Paribhāṣā does not have such a large number of commentaries.  Did more students study the Tarkasaṃgraha as compared to students studying these other works from allied branches?  What has been the experience in the Pāṭhaśālās?

One reason could be the fact of काणादं पाणिनीयं च ....So, all those who go for mimamsa, uttara and purva, will have studied the tarka sangraha and of course, the more advanced works there.

As an aside, it is said the Srimadbhagavatam has several hundred commentaries.

Thinking about texts with high number of commentaries, two works that come to my mind are Nāgeśabhaṭṭa's Paribhāṣenduśekhara and Śabdenduśekhara.  It looks like while Śabdenduśekhara was widely studied, the larger work Br̥hat-Śabdenduśekhara was not studied so widely.  Similarly, while the Parama-Laghu-Mañjūṣā and the Laghumañjūṣā were studied more widely, the larger Br̥hat-Mañjūṣā was not studied so widely. These larger texts have only recently been published, while the shorter texts have undergone numerous editions, commentaries and reprints. For some reason, there are half dozen commentaries on Kaiyaṭa's Pradīpa [now published from Pondichery], but not so many on Nāgeśa's Uddyota [except Vaidyanāṭha's Chāyā, extracts included in the Nirnaya Sagara edition of the Mahābhāṣya].  I am wondering what all these differences point to.  It would be nice to have some sort of a historical account of the curriculums of traditional Pāṭhaśālās for the last few centuries from various parts of India.  That might throw some light on which texts were more widely studied and where.  Do we have sources for such a historical account?

A bibliography has to be created consulting NCC and books which have accurate an verifiable bibliography information. Once that is done in a comprehensive manner then further analytical studies including 'historical account of the curriculums of traditional Pāṭhaśālās for the last few centuries from various parts of India' Newer editions and more secondary studies is possible Request subject matter experts like you to contribute towards a comprehensive bibliography .

PS It is just not enough to say a given text has a thousand commentaries. Those commentaries have to be listed. Published information should be documented and manuscripts where they exists information should be given accurately

Can scholars please point out books or reports which have information on  curriculum being followed by different pathashals across India. Have the  curriculum and emphasis changed over the centuries. What are the texts and which editions of the texts are prescribed for various branches of learning.

This pursuit also involves the question of how many pathashala teachers are members of BVP. After "Sanskrit in India" survey of 1974(?), do we have an updated list of pathashala-s?

At least if we have pathashala-heads on our list, there may be some hope for some decent quantum of information.

Dear Friends,

There are many local libraries or centres of learning where rare manuscripts are preserved.

Some 25/30 years back,I saw one such com.on the Tarkasangraha in the Sarvajanik Vachanalay,Nashik. It is written by some scholar named Gadgil Shastri. This library, like the H.P.T.College,Nashik,contains many rare and unknown Sanskrit MSS.

Moreover,in the Libraries of the different Maharajas also, there is a treasure of old and rare MSS not much known outside that State. It is just possible that we may get some com.on the Tarkasangraha in those libraries.

Some young scholars should take up such a project to unearth such rare and almost unknown MSS.,by focusing on certain specific texts.

Just released:

The second volume of Bhāskarakaṇṭha's Mokṣopāya-Nirvāṇa-Ṭīkā edited by
Bruno Lo Turco (Roma).

"This volume completes the critical edition of the large extant
fragment of the Nirvāṇaprakaraṇa — the sixth section of the Mokṣopāya
— with the commentary Nirvāṇaṭīkā of Bhāskarakaṇṭha, one of the last
great non-dualist Śaivite masters. The Mokṣopāya, a huge
philosophico-soteriological work probably composed by a Kashmiri
author in the tenth century of our era, was the original version of
what would become the Yogavāsiṣṭha, which enjoyed enormous popularity
in India, in certain regions second only to the two great epic poems."
