Ideally, attractively produced, with a Hindi translation (it's to be a present). But if you know of a good collection without translation, please mention this too, since my next job is going to be finding a physical copy, and that could well be the biggest joke of them all.

Thank you,
Irene

"हास्यकणिकाः"
is, I think, the name of the book published by Samskrita Bharati.
A small book, with some cartoons too.

Is there a way to download/purchase them?

Was thinking of the word for joke in Sanskrit or other Indian languages.

In Telugu , I realized that the word parāchikamu (singular) parāchikālu (plural) and navvulāṭa (singular) were being used.

parāchikamu (singular) parāchikālu (plural) is a tadbhava coming from parihāsika/parihāsaka and navvulāṭa (singular) is a dēśya.

parihāsa should then be the Sanskrit word for joke.

navvulāṭa is a joking act or joking as act but not a joke.

One could say idi  parāchikamu = this is a joke.  ivi parāchikālu = these are jokes. But  navvulāṭa can not be used that way. One can say    navvulāṭaku annānu = I said this just as a joke. But literally  navvulāṭaku is  navvulāṭa + ku =  for joking . So  navvulāṭaku annānu = I said this for joking.

But in Sanskrit , it is possible to say parihāsōyam. So  parihāsa can be a word for joke.

In Malayalam, parihāsam means ridicule, or making fun of someone or something.  Parihāsam cannot be an innocent joke, it is always at the expense of someone or something.  For joke, the word used in Malayalam is tamāśa which is from Hindi/Urdu tamāśā.  A more native term is nērampōkkŭ which literally means time pass (nēram + pōkkŭ).  In Sanskritized Malayalam the word for joke is narmam (നർമ്മം नर्मम्)

There are very few books in Marathi and English dealing with Hasyarasa, Vinoda and Subhashita etc.because,I think, rhetoricians did not give proper or due attention to the topic of Hasyarasa and it's detailed treatment.

Opinions of others are solicited yo correct or support me.

Shankara ji, thank you for the references, I’ll start searching for copies of these books.
Subbu ji, as usual, your WhatsApp adventures bring us gems. You probably could single-handedly run a joke thread on BVP, considering how much new stuff you bring in. Actually, if such a thread is set up, everyone could deposit the jokes they hear or read there.

There is a small collection of 53 verses dedicated for hasyarasa  in the page 363 of the Subhashita Ratana Bhandagara by Kashinatha Sharma available in archive.org for download. But there is no Hindi or English translation.

Namaste

For Joke:  Samskruth term

How about - 'vainodikii'  (  vak, samvaadah, kathanam, kathaa ::  a statement, expression, narrative,  story   -  which produces  mirth)

Basis:  Bharata's Natya shaastra is said to be technically an instrument for ' Vinoda-Karanam   loke'-  an act to alleviate, lighten the mood, reduce the seriousness, ease the tension, see a flip side expression !

For contemplation please.

Why should we use difficult words like Vainodiki etc. This tendency of using pedantic words sometimes creates hindrances in the understanding.

This is just a suggestion with no intention to hurt any scholar or his standing in the scholarly world.
