पञ्चीकरण and supplementary texts

Dear friends,

Happy Diwali.

I had heard about Shakara's  पञ्चीकरण text and I read today.

Can someone help me if the idea comes from previous sources?

Are there texts that advance the idea to create a cosmology model?

I want to use the model to simulate the environment that we cognize.

All Vedanta schools accept the Panchikarana. In the Chandogya Upanishad the sixth chapter has the trivrutkarana involving three elements Tejas Aapah and Prithvi. The Taittiriya Upanishad mentions all the five elements including Akasha and Vayu even though the Pachikarana process is not explicitly stated there.

The five elements are mentioned in the Mundakopanishad too. So too in many other Upanishads.

It is to create objects from the elements.

Shankra has a half and one eighth theory.  Where did he get it

or did he initiate it?  Has there been extensions?  What would

be the speculation on mind?

Please help with references if possible.

Shankara says in the Chandogya Bhashya 6.4.4:   यथा तु त्रिवृत्कृते त्रीणि रूपाणीत्येव सत्यम् , तथा पञ्चीकरणेऽपि समानो न्याय इत्यतः सर्वस्य सद्विकारत्वात् सता विज्ञातेन सर्वमिदं विज्ञातं   From the Trivrutkarana of the Chandogya, we can infer the Panchikarana.  

This above inference is admitted by all others too.

The following is found in the Shabdakalpadruma, which cites the Vedantasāra, a post-Shankara Advaitic work:

पञ्चीकरणं, क्ली, पञ्चभूतानां भागविशेषेण मिश्री-

करणम् । यथा । “पञ्चीकरणन्तु आकाशादि-

पञ्चस्वेकैकं द्विधा समं विभज्य तेषु दशसु

भागेषु मध्ये प्राथमिकान् पञ्चभागान् प्रत्येकं

चतुर्द्धा समं विभज्य तेषां चतुर्णां भागानां

स्वस्वद्वितीयार्द्धभागं परित्यज्य भागान्तरेषु

संयोजनम् । तदुक्तम् ।

द्विधा विधाय चैकैकं चतुर्द्धा प्रथमं पुनः ।

स्वस्वेतरद्वितीयांशैर्योजनात् पञ्च पञ्च ते ॥ इति ॥  (This he is citing from the Panchadashi of Vidyaranya, 14th CE) 

अस्याप्रामाण्यं नाशङ्कनीयं त्रिवृत्करणश्रुतेः

पञ्चीकरणस्याप्युपलक्षणार्थत्वात् । पञ्चानां पञ्चा-

त्मकत्वे समानेऽपि तेषु च वैशिष्ट्यात्तु तद्बादस्त-

द्वाद इति न्यायेन आकाशादिव्यपदेशः सम्भवति ।

तदानीमाकाशे शब्दोऽभिव्यज्यते । वायौ शब्द-

स्पर्शौ । अग्नौ शब्दस्पर्शरूपाणि । अप्सु शब्द-

स्पर्शरूपरसाः । पृथिव्यां शब्दस्पर्शरूपरस-

गन्धाश्च । एतेभ्यः पञ्चीकृतेभ्यो भूतेभ्यः

भूर्भुवः स्वर्म्महर्जनस्तपः सत्यमित्येतन्नामकानामु-

पर्य्युपरि विद्यमानानां अतलवितलसुतलरसा-

तलतलातलमहातलपातालनामकानां अधोऽधो

विद्यमानानां लोकानां ब्रह्माण्डस्य तदन्तर्गत-

चतुर्व्विधस्थूलशरीराणामन्नपानादीनाञ्चोत्पत्ति-

र्भवति ॥” इति वेदान्तसारः । ३९-४२ ॥

There is the Devi Bhagavatam where too the Panchikaranam is mentioned, but not in detail:  We do not know when this was composed:

पञ्चीकृत्य तु तान्येव पञ्चभूतसमुद्‌भवः ।
पञ्चीकरणभेदोऽयं शृणु संवदतः किल ॥ ४३ ॥
प्रथमं रसतन्मात्रामुपादाय मनस्यपि ।
कल्पयेच्च तथा तद्वै यथा भवति चोदकम् ॥ ४४ ॥
शिष्टानां चैव भूतानामंशान्कृत्वा पृथक्पृथक् ।
उदके मिश्रयेच्चांशान्कृते रसमये ततः ॥ ४५ ॥
तदा भूतविभागे च चैतन्ये च प्रकाशिते ।'

So too the Ganesha Tapini Upanishad has this:  The Date of this is also not known: 

पञ्चतन्मात्राः पञ्चसूक्ष्मभूतान्यु-पादाय पञ्चीकरणे कृते पञ्चमहाभूतान्यजायन्त । अवशिष्टानां पञ्चपञ्चाशानांकल्पारम्भसमये भूतविभागे चैतन्यप्रवेशादहमित्यभिमानः ।
