Yes, I remember the occasion when the first issue was released. I was present there.
It was at the Glass House in Lal Bagh, Bangalore (it was not yet BengalUru then).

Incidentally, my own book called kRdanta-rUpa-kos'a was also released right there.
ChaMu Krishna Shastri was in his highest spirits on the occasion.

(That was my second book (after my dhAtu-rUpa-kos'a)).

Given the dearth of children's literature in Sanskrit, it may be a nice idea for Chandamama from 1947 to 1983 to be translated into Sanskrit - at least all the good stories.

To me the most interesting would be the वैतालकथा.

In my student days I liked the बैताल पचीसी [वेताल पञ्चविंशति (Vetala Panchavimshati) in Sanskrit]. The last story is the most interesting one.
In Chandamama (be it in any language), it is a never-ending process.

I remember reading Chandamama in three languages in my boyhood days.  Chandamama in Hindi and English and Ambili Ammaavan in Malayalam.  Much more later, it was Amar Chitra Katha, again in all these three languages.

Could anybody recall prominent sources of children’s stories in Sanskrit before Chandamama came along? If you were already on Earth at that time, you are requested to think deeply and try to recall places that put out Sanskrit stories for middle schoolers, approximately speaking.

The only sources for stories in Sanskrit for children those days
- when publication of children's books was scarce even in the various State languages
(primarily owing to scarcity of finance and enterprise) -
could be the selections in school books - high schools predominantly.
Primers and chrestomathies too performed some role.

If we can gather school Sanskrit texts of those days,
we could get a good chunk.

That is exactly why I’m asking these questions, Professor Kannan: so that we can gather the stories. If I understand you correctly, these would be state-compiled and state-published textbooks for schools in that state. When did the practice of creating such schoolbooks begin? Were some states more active than others? How can I find out about this? 
By the way, I’ve been told by people who are now in their late 70s-early 80s that schoolbooks of their time were more intelligently written. Already people of my parents’ generation onwards report some dumbing down of textbooks in order to cater to education as mass production.

If the Maharashtra board had sanskrit textbooks back then, these should be found in the balabharati library in Pune. Afaik, they maintain a set of all textbooks from each edition for archival.
If anyone who lives in Pune could drop by and maybe take photocopies, that would be great.

And regarding language textbooks in school (Hindi, English, etc), I can certainly attest that the stories in the 1980s were very vibrant. I still remember some after all these years. They have of course vanished in the new editions now.

Perhaps the other indian state boards also have some sort of a similar archive. Maybe BVP members in different states could find out ?

I have chanced upon several such books in the Internet Archive itself,
though (the DLI data is) all shabbily or only nominally covered.
Best to look under captions like gadya-padya-san'grahaH/san'kalanam,
or books beginning with the word samskRta like samskRta-prathamAdars'aH or some such word.

The third group of three books retells the epic Mahabharata in simple Sanskrit episodes which gradually develop a student’s knowledge of grammar. In each chapter, a theme which appears in the Sanskrit epic is also discussed. It makes sense for students to have completed studying the first two groups of books before starting these books.


By the time learners have completed this course, they will have a good basic grasp of the  Sanskrit language, its vocabulary, structure and grammar. These books are an attempt to teach Sanskrit in a simple and systematic manner that may well dispel the notion that Sanskrit is a difficult language.

BTW, when did वेतालकथा started in Chandamama ?
In the August 1949 issue (Hindi), it is not there. But in April 1984 issue, it is included in Hindi as well as Sanskrit. But the two stories are different.

That's the main reason I'm not too bothered about non-Sanskrit Chandamamas. If the stories were the same, that would make Chandamama a prime candidate for inclusion into the parallel corpus. So the suggestion voiced by Vishal to translate non-Sanskrit Chandamamas into Sanskrit could also be turned on its head if we request that people translate their favourite Sanskrit Chandamama stories into their mother tongues and let the list know about it. After being reviewed by the list experts, such translations and their originals could then go into the corpus.

I used to read चांदोबा magazine in Marathi during my childhood in Pune and it even then contained stories of Vetāla, stories of Tenali Rama and versions of stories from the Kathāsaritsāgara etc.  I have been looking for digitized issues of the Marathi magazine, but no luck yet.

Chandamama (Marathi) started in April 1952. 

But here scanned copies are available from 1960 only. Moreover, the scan is of poor quality.
In Hindi, although scans are much better (each page separately), but each issue occupies large space (300 MB to 500 MB).
The Marathi version of January 1960 is 58 MB.

Sir, I made a trial to know exactly when the  वेतालकथा in Chandamama started.
In Hindi, it was started from Oct. 1955, whereas in English it was from Nov. 1955.
In Telugu it was expected to appear first. Although I have not verified by directly downloading, it must have been Sept. 1955.
The Sanskrit version does not include the initial introductory story, but Hindi and English versions do.

To me the most interesting would be the वैतालकथा.

In my student days I liked the बैताल पचीसी [वेताल पञ्चविंशति (Vetala Panchavimshati) in Sanskrit]. The last story is the most interesting one.
In Chandamama (be it in any language), it is a never-ending process.
