I was reading about rice and sugarcane fields in raghuvamsha and about the shAligopyaH who used to protect the fields (and sung raghu's prowess).

Searched a lot regarding scarecrows but couldn't find much info online. Hence this query.

Were there other kinds of gopAs ? How were crops protected from pests/birds/animals in ancient India?

Any pointers for the same is greatly appreciated.

विभीषिका vibhīṣikā 1 Terror. -2 A means of terrifying, a scare (a scare-crow); नालं युद्धाय वै रक्षो महतीयं विभीषिका Rām.6.66.6; यदि ते सन्ति सन्त्वेव केयमन्या विभीषिका U.4.28. [The etymology of this word as pointed out by Nārāyaṇa in his commentary on this word is apparently wrong. The correct word appears to be विभीषिका and not विभीषिका for विभीषिकाशब्दस्य भीषिधातोर्ण्वुल्प्रत्ययनिष्पन्नत्वादन्तस्थवकारादित्वमेव समीचीनम् Mañjūṣā.]

(both words look the same)
