In 80 years, Indian politicians, bureaucrats, and activists have done nothing more than exacerbate divisions and bind more red tape on actual, perceived, and imagined wrongs.

One step forward, two steps back...

God save India!

As you know, Dr. Kannan, a lot of the verbiage on these matters is imported from the US by Indian activists and bureaucrats.

We are seeing backlash in the US against DEI excesses, but once Trump is gone, that pendulum will swing back.

There is a conflation between race and caste here, but in India, it does not matter, for caste is the creator, sustainer, and destroyer -- the new Indian trimurti :-(

The new leela...

With regards,

Ramesh

As a point for keener observation, I would like to highlight that the regulation , unlike the SC ST atrocities act, does not help a student of a HEI belonging to the category listed in the regulation to file a case against an individual student or teacher or a non teaching officer or staff of a HEI .

The regulation is aimed at controlling HEIs as institutions in the execution of constitutional safeguards against discrimination already provided by the constitution and the derivative rules of UGC and HEIs . Consequences as per the regulation are only to the HEI as an organization , not to any individual.

Consequences are in the form of disincentives through reducing or cutting the grants from UGC to the HEI concerned.

The issues to be escalated are not between individual students but between a student and the HEI in which the student is a legitimate applicant or admitted student.

While this positive aspect has missed many eyes,
wouldn't the HEI turn the heat, in turn, on the individual student/faculty
deemed responsible for such curtailment of grants?
Or, are there other checks and balances, too?

I was travelling to participate in the Vishwasambhrama event at Kukke Subrahmanya kshetra.

Yes, Prof. Kannan , your original hunch has been vindicated by the developments so far.

From a young academic in India:

"Sir, I am very disappointed by the way the BJP is handling this new UGC rules issue. The Sangh as well, with its outreach, is all into befriending the Left rather than fostering the causes of the Hindu community. It has created a deep disillusionment in me. Our college was upgraded to a state university last year. I thought we could do a lot of work with Indian Knowledge Systems and similar areas. The people who have been posted as VC and Registrar are "Sangh people" apparently. The weird thing is that they are not interested in forwarding the Hindu cause. They are instead focusing on Leftist approval on the local and state level.

"I messaged you out of sheer depression, sir. Not asking for help or anything like that. Just thought I needed to vent to someone who will listen to me."

What can BVP do? I believe that senior/retired faculty who have knowledge and expertise in university administration and curricular matters should begin doing public audits of some of the major universities and share their concerns.

This is going to get some blowback, and some people will be concerned. But if we fail to bell the cat, no one will.

Ramesh Rao

An Education Minister, years ago, from the same dispensation, was so obsequious as to declare:
"We have not altered even a comma"  - wrt the Leftist text book!
Conflation between what one has to be proud of,  and what, rather ashamed of!

And now, this servile capitulation to all the 10 demands of Indira Jaising,
who has earned the epithet as the FCRA Scandal Queen!

Ultimately, this is accentuating caste divisions, rather than attenuating the fault-lines!
A veritable death-knell for all meritorious candidates!
Throwing the doors open to  condemnation sans even a semblance of a trial?

Dear Prof. Rao and Prof. Kannan,

I agree with you completely--there is much more ambiguity in the leadership about the Hindu/Sanatani cause. We are in a very difficult situation in our society with respect to not having CLARITY in education ministry leadership. How can you claim to become a "vishwaguru" or compete at the World stage without a clear vision and a rigorous leadership in educational meritocracy.

Best Regards,
