Dear Scholars,
       Namaste.
I would like to know the publication details of some textbook for computing planetary positions with complete derivational history of the final formulae used.
I have read Spherical Astronomy by W.M. Smart. It gives derivations for some basic equations related to planetary motion, but nothing about how to compute planetary positions.
       Regards

Thank you very much sir for the pdf file of the book "Astronomical Algorithms". I purchased the same book in October 2002.
But it does not give the derivation of the final formulae.

I have been trying since long to catch hold of any such book. I even visited IUCCA. But to no avail. The only book that gives detailed derivation of the formula used for computing Moon's position (and general equations for other planets) is in Marathi ("ग्रह-गति-सिद्धान्त" by शिवराम गणपतराव पवार, published in 1968), but which does not use any single mathematical symbol in English. Six sample pages (414-419) are attached as .jpeg files.

The book I sent has all the details. On page 413 the Appendix III it gives the periodic terms for every planet. Chapter 32 has explained how the heliocentric positions can be found with the help of Appendix III periodic terms. Chapter 33 has explained how the geocentric positions can be found from the heliocentric positions. Everything is there and explained nicely.

Namaste.
Thanks for further explanation.
Kindly let me know if any soft copy of "Astronomy for Astrologers" by John Filbey is available.

Shri Narayan Prasad ji,
Narayanaya Namah!
The best and easiest book available as on date is:
Peter Different Smith: Astronomy With your Personl Computer.---Cambrige University Press, 1985.
It must be available in pdf also but I have not been able to find it.
In any case it is available with Amazon.
Once you get the book, pl. let me know so that I could send you the computer programs
( In Basic/Qbasic,/Quick Basic) on-line or off-line so that you do not have to do the keyboarding---an arduous chore!
If you somehow find the pdf version kindly do share it with the forum so that other members could also benefit from the same!
With regards and Narayanaya Namah!

Kindly use this download link for Peter Duffet Smith book

But you will not find how to calculate Rahu and Ketu true positions in this book.

Shri A K Kaul Mahoday,
    Namaste.

<<Once you get the book, pl. let me know so that I could send you the computer programs>>

Thanks to Venkatesh ji, I have successfully downloaded it.

<<( In Basic/Qbasic,/Quick Basic) on-line or off-line so that you do not have to do the keyboarding---an arduous chore!>>

I am used to QuickBasic, but such programs are not supported by Windows 8.1. I was able to run some programs written by me on Windows 7.
Do you know how to run QuickBasic programs on Windows 8.1?
I would like to get the offline version. Link of the online version could also be supplied.

Shri Narayan Prasadji,
Narayanaya Namah,
I am afraid you will have to make your computer a dual boot system-------one Windows7 that too 32 bit architecture for such DOS based programs.
The other you can continue with Windows8 whether 32 bit or 64 bit for other programs.
You may not however be able to install Windows7, 32 bit if it has Windows8 already, though you can install Windows8 after Windows7 .
No doubt it is a cumbersome process but that is what I had to do and am not having any problems now----best of both the worlds!
Regarding the Peter-Duffet
Smith programs that I have, I  will have to check if they have become obsolete as they were based on 1985 version whereas Shri Venktesh Murthyji has been kind enough to give the pointer for 1991 version.
I will get back to you shortly.
Btw, there are quite a few open source programs like Astrolog7.5, Stellarium or even the much touted "Mahabharata" "riddle solver"  Planetarium Gold program!
If you are comfortable with VB6, you could use VSOP87,which is not as up to date as Swiss Ephemeris but then it does serve the purpose of dating the events from 10000 BCE up to 10000 CE!
And last but not the least, the Swiss Ephemeris Test page is there for anybody to use, thanks to Shri Dieter Koch and his team and it is the most accurate program as on date without any hassles---that to
o from about 13000 BCE to about 17000 AD---if I am not mistaken!!
With regards and Narayanaya Namah!
A K Kaul

नमस्ते श्री कौल महोदय!

<<If you are comfortable with VB6, you could use VSOP87,which is not as up to date as Swiss Ephemeris but then it does serve the purpose of dating the events from 10000 BCE up to 10000 CE!>>

BTW, do you mean VSOP87 is available for the public along with its complete code?
I did have a few programs (e.g. calculations of अधिकमास and क्षयमास), originally written by me in QuickBasic, but later converted to VB6 by a friend of mine. But I could not transfer them on the later version of PC.

Whatever QuickBasic program you have got, I would like to get it as a text file. At least I will be able to see. I can convert that to Fortran77, which is supported on Windows 8.1.

Narayan Prasad

Shri Narayan Prasadji,
 Narayanaya Namah!
Since Shri Vishwas Vasuki has given a pointer to Quick Basic in 64 bit version, I think you should first try the same for Win8.2.
I am afraid I will not be able to convert DOS based programs to text format since there is nothing like copy-paste outside of Qbasic etc.
All I can do is send you a couple of programs to start with which you which you can try in Qbasic64 bit version.
Regarding VSOP87, it was sent to me by a friend from West Germany quite sometime back.
It contains the entire data and generates the details in a set format. It is without lunar elements but you can integrate them in the same from some other source.
If you so desire or if some other members are interested I can share it on mediafire.com.
I have been playing around with it and I enjoyed it much!
With regards and Narayanaya Namah!
A K Kaulo

Shri Kaul ji,
     Namaste.

<<I am afraid I will not be able to convert DOS based programs to text format since there is nothing like copy-paste outside of Qbasic etc>>

No, you are not supposed to do copy/paste. The QBasic has the facility to save either as .BAS or as .TXT. Open the file and then save it as .TXT. Then send it as attached file, or whichever way is convenient to you.
I have the software "qb45". This has that facility.

<<Since Shri Vishwas Vasuki has given a pointer to Quick Basic in 64 bit version, I think you should first try the same for Win8.2.>>

Does this version accept the DOS version of QBasic codes?
Have to write to Shri Vishwas Vasuki, or do you have the link where to get that 64bit version of QBasic?

   Regards

Shri Narayan Prasadji,
Narayanaya Namah!
Sorry , it was Shri उज्ज्वल who had sent the linK which is
You can try it.
I will see what I can do about sending the program to you in text format if qb4.564 bit is not of use to you.
With regards and Narayanaya Namah!

Thank you so much श्री उज्ज्वल महोदय for this link.
I have successfully downloaded it and try to open the QuickBasic program written by me more than 20 years ago.
It does open it successfully, but the program which was running earlier, now gives error at certain line number.
Earlier this program was running without problem and giving correct results.

Of course, in 32bit PC, I had to use double precision for certain variables. But in 64 bit, it may not be necessary.

Namaste Shri Kaul Ji.

<<Sorry , it was Shri उज्ज्वल who had sent the linK which is: https://www.qb64.org/portal/>>

As already replied to him, this software I have already downloaded. It does open the old QBasic programs successfully.
