Namaskar all,

Recently I came across this name.  It is said to be of Sanskrit origin, and also the name of a Hindu princess.  I am unable to verify both claims.  If someone can shed more light on it and show me how to write it correctly in Devanagari script, I will greatly appreciate it.

Thank you.

नमो विद्वद्भ्यः

सैषा  --

this term as it is seen in भृगुवल्ली (6) of तैत्तिरीयोपनिषत्  --

सैषा भार्गवी वारुणी विद्या । परमे व्योमन् प्रतिष्ठिता ।

भृगुणा  विदिता  वरुणेन  प्रोक्ता  वारुणी विद्या - इत्यर्थः ।

सा एषा - the one that was  described  earlier  is this वारुणी  विद्या   --- just like सो’यं देवदत्तः -- प्रत्यभिज्ञा ।

May be someone might have given it  as a name .

धन्यो’स्मि

I really appreciate your response and the interpretation.  I am familiar with the Taittareeya Upanishad and did not think that word as used in it meant that it was a noun or a name. I was considering सा एषा and सा ईषा as two possibilities, neither of which seem to make much sense as a name for a girl.   IMHO, it is an artificial construct by someone. I have not been able to verify the claim that it was a name of a Hindu princess or the purported meaning of the name.

Thanks again.

Thank you for shading further light on this.  Since Devi is feminine, I think this occurrence of सैषा in all these statements indicates that it is सा एषा . "She is ...", all that is that is described, eight vasus, eleven rudras, twelve adityas, etc.  Please confirm or enlighten me further.

I still have not found an answer to the question whether a Hindu princess was indeed named सैषा, her time, lineage, etc.  I am not sure about the assigned meaning of this name either.  Any further light on these will be very useful.

Thanks again.

Namaste

I hope the name सैषा is not chosen because it is close to a foreign name Sasha. I have seen many Indian parents choose names like these to look modern and make it easy for foreigners to pronounce. Examples are Rita, Anita, Sheila, Bina, Trisha and so on.

Well, it is chosen for that precise reason.  There are many names chosen this way because they sound "modern", and are claimed to have Sanskrit origin and mean something. But, as Nityananda Misra has discussed in one of his videos, that is not necessarily true always.  Such is the state of affairs. Mr. Rajiv Malhotra has described it as a result of our inferiority complex.  I tend to agree with that description now more than before.

Thanks for your feedback.

Anyhow it is not a single name, for sure. But only two pronouns सा एषा meaning she is this (wouman) written as two words joined as  सा+एषा = सैषा. And not as सैष as स एषः could not be joined as सैष.
