Respected Vidvaj Janas,

I have come across references indicating that cow dung (gomaya) is used in Panchagavya preparations and other purification rituals. I am keen to understand whether there are specific injunctions especially, in the Dharma Shastras regarding the use of bull dung, or if there exist any traditional practices that prescribe its use.

Although the term gomaya is often used to refer to both cow dung and bull dung, I have noticed that the scriptures do not seem to provide detailed instructions distinguishing the two. I would be grateful if learned scholars could kindly provide clarity on this matter and guide me regarding scriptural references or traditional practices concerning the use of bull dung in ritual contexts.

Traditionally bill dung is used on vastupujan ritual पूर्वौ सन्धे गोपायताम् same to दक्षिण and west and north wherein a yajaman couple imprints both hands on walls

Is there any discription either in Dharma sastra or in Sadacara where it is seen that the bull dung is used as substitute for cow dung.

There is this instruction in the Āpastamba grhysūtra to place the hairs (that have been cut), in the Upanayana ceremony, on bull-dung:

उपनयनं व्याख्यास्यामः १
गर्भाष्टमेषु ब्राह्मणमुपनयीत २
गर्भैकादशेषु राजन्यं गर्भद्वादशेषु वैश्यम् ३
वसन्तो ग्रीष्मश्शरदित्यृतवो वर्णानुपूर्व्येण ४
ब्राह्मणान्भोजयित्वाशिषो वाचयित्वा कुमारं भोजयित्वाऽनुवाकस्य प्रथमेन यजुषाऽपः संसृज्योष्णाश्शीतास्वानीयोत्तरया शिर उनत्ति ५
त्रींस्त्रीन् दर्भानन्तर्धायोत्तराभिश्चतसृभिः प्रतिमन्त्रं प्रतिदिशं प्रवपति ६
वपन्तमुत्तरयानुमन्त्रयते दक्षिणतो माता ब्रह्मचारी वा ७
आनडुहे शकृत्पिण्डे यवान्निधाय तस्मिन्केशानुपयम्योत्तरयोदुम्बरमूले दर्भस्तम्बे वा निदधाति ८
