Dear preceptors,

I was looking for books/works/thesis that compare and contrast the concept of non-duality in the Advaita Vedantic tradition and the tradition of Buddhism.

The only thesis that I managed to find was the following (https://open.library.ubc.ca/.../download/pdf/831/1.0093585/1), but I am sure there are better, deeper studies of the similarities and differences...

Any help or direction most appreciated.

Sincerely, 🙏

Sunil

Hello Sunil Ji,

Here is a link to seven publications that may be of interest to you in comparing Buddhism and Advaita.  This is by no means a comprehensive listing, but just what I collected casually from my hard drive.  The more interesting studies are comparisons between Gauḍapāda and the traditions of Yogācāra and Mādhyamika Buddhism.  Also a very important text is Bhāviveka's Vedānta-Tattva-Viniścaya chapter of his Madhyamaka-Hr̥daya-Kārika.  This is the earliest Buddhist discussion of Vedānta known to us, and it is roughly contemporary with Gauḍapāda. You can find this in Quarnstrom-Olle-Hindu-Philosophy-in-Buddhist-Perspective-Vedānta-Tattva-Viniścaya-Chapter-of-Bhavya's-Madhyamaka-Hr̥daya-Kārikā which I have included in my list. But my list is just a tip of the iceberg.  There are many more studies, and you may find many of those in the bibliographies of the items that I have included.  With best wishes,

Dear Dr. Deshpande,

I really really appreciate this gesture. This set of books and papers is enough for me to get going and start the study that was nascent in my mind..

I am especially happy to see that you gave me relevant references that point to comparisons between the Māṇḍukya Kārikā of Gauḍapāda and Vasubandhu's Yoga-achara thoughts...

Much indebted for this sharing,

Sincerely,

Sunil 🙏
